SEC Tournament Betting – Gators Add Tourney Win To Regular-Season Title

Posted by Washington Tucker on 2/6/2014 2:16:23 AM

Some sports betting players have forgotten about the SEC when it comes to hoops as football takes precedence in the South, but it’s been an excitement season with three teams who could make deep runs into the NCAA Tournament, and we’re taking a well-balanced team from Gainesville who seem to have it all.

  • What: College basketball betting
  • When: Begins Thursday, March 10th, 1:00 PM ET
  • Where: The Georgia Dome, Atlanta, GA
  • Pick: Florida Gator

College Basketball Betting: Kentucky (+150)

The Wildcats come in as the second seed in the East, winning five of their last six games, and they’ll just be happy to going to a neutral site as Kentucky were terrible on the road. While the Wildcats are a miserable 3-7 against top-level competition away from Rupp Arena, they were 3-1 at neutral sites, including wins over Washington, Connecticut and Notre Dame. The Wildcats are incredibly talented with Brandon Knight, Terrence Jones and Doron Lamb, but they’re all freshmen and not as good as the incredible group that led Kentucky to their 26th SEC tournament win last year. They’re going to need Darius Miller and DeAndre Liggins to step up as underclassmen when the freshmen get out of control.

College Basketball Betting: Florida (+175)

The Gators came away with the regular-season title, and they’ve big and experienced up front with Vernon Macklin and Alex Tyus, and talented at the back end with Erving Walker and Kenny Boynton. They also have one of the most underrated players in the country in Chandler Parsons, who does it all for the Gators, who have won eight of their last nine heading into the SEC tournament. One glaring weakness is that the Gators are 238th in the country at the foul line, so it’s going to be nail-biting time if Florida is at the charity stripe with the game on the line.

College Basketball Betting: Vanderbilt (+450)

The Commodores just missed out on a bye by dropping three of their last four, and John Jenkins leads a team that is 26th in the nation in scoring. Jeff Taylor and Brad Tinsley also chip in on the perimeter, but the Commodores have really become an elite team in the SEC as Festus Ezeli progressed to give them a huge presence in the post at both ends of the floor. He allows the Commodores to gamble a bit more, and even though Vanderbilt is 165th in points allowed, they’re 54th in field-goal defense and eighth in three-point defense. The Commodores are a real darkhorse to play deep into March, and they could win their first SEC tournament in 60 years.

College Basketball Betting: Alabama (+800)

No, this isn’t football: the Crimson Tide have a very good hoops team who earned a first-round bye for winning the SEC West. Alabama isn’t an offensive juggernaut, outside of JaMychal Green and Tony Mitchell, so they do it with defense, ranking seventh in points allowed, fourth in field-goal defense and 30th in three-point defense. Green and Mitchell have helped the Crimson Tide rank 23rd in blocks and with those two patrolling the pant, Alabama can gamble on the perimeter, coming in seventh in steals. If they can limit their turnovers, the Crimson Tide have a shot in the SEC tournament.

College Basketball Betting: Tennessee (+800)

The Volunteers have been disjointed all season, beginning with the eight-game SEC suspension for coach Bruce Pearl, and more violations were a cause for distraction in Knoxville. Even though their record doesn’t look that great, the Volunteers have lost just three of 13 games by 10 points or less, so a couple more breaks and Tennessee may have won the East. Scotty Hopson and Tobias Harris gives the Volunteers scoring, and they’re a scrappy defensive unit who don’t make it easy on the opposition. They probably won’t win the tournament, but it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if Tennessee were to snatch their fourth SEC tournament and first since 1979.

College Basketball Betting: The Rest

Take a look at Mississippi State at +1500, as the Bulldogs have won four of their last five games, they played well in a loss at Kentucky and they also beat the Gators. South Carolina is inexplicably rated at +1000 and Mississippi comes in at +1500, but both struggled down the stretch. One team that could also make a run is Georgia at +1000, given that they’ll have “home court” advantage at the Georgia Dome, and they know a solid run to the finals could get them in the Big Dance.

College Basketball Betting: Outlook And Pick

The East has been far better than their West counterparts this season, and they’ll come away with the win; in fact, they’ll likely put three teams in the semifinals on Saturday as Florida, Kentucky and Vanderbilt are the class of the conference. But we’re taking Florida with their mix of experience, inside scoring, streaky perimeter shooting, and the best player in the SEC in Parsons. Take the Gators to win their fourth SEC tournament (and first since 2007) in your online betting picks.
