Syracuse Louisville Betting – Injury-Ravaged Cardinals Hope To Fend Off The Orange

Posted by Washington Tucker on 2/6/2014 1:24:35 AM

The Louisville Cardinals are rapidly running out of bodies, but they’ll try to make a gallant stand on their home court this weekend against the Syracuse Orange.

NCAA basketball betting: Syracuse Orange @ Louisville Cardinals

Why To Bet On Syracuse

The sports betting cognoscenti should be able to agree that while a healthy Louisville team would stand a very good chance against Syracuse at home, the current collection of Cardinals is not likely to be up to the job. An NHL trade deadline list of available players should be posted in Louisville’s locker room. Cardinal coach Rick Pitino doesn’t even have to bring aboard basketball specialists at this point. Having some muscular hockey players who could occupy space near the rim and rebound would be quite valuable to the U of L at this point. Just having bodies is an urgent matter for the Cardinals. Their best perimeter shooter, Preston Knowles, will be available for this game, but two of their big men, Gorgui Dieng and Rakeem Buckles, are not likely to take the court against an imposing Syracuse front line that’s led by rebounding machine Rick Jackson. Eight different Louisville players have been injured this season, and many of them are well below 100 percent at the moment. Syracuse is a fresher team and – given the injuries to Louisville’s post players – a more powerful one within six feet of the basket. As long as Syracuse avoids turnovers, it has a better-than-even chance of winning on the road.

Why To Bet On Louisville

NHL trade rumors are often deceiving, and so was last season’s Big East Conference season. Sure, Syracuse won the 2010 Big East championship and earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. However, Louisville threw a curveball to the rest of the country by beating the Orange not once, but twice.

Pitino is a close friend of Syracuse boss Jim Boeheim. It was Boeheim who offered Pitino an assistant coaching job on the night of Pitino’s wedding to his wife, Joanne, in 1976. Pitino has a good feel for what Boeheim likes to do; the two men coached against each other in the 1996 national championship game when Pitino was at Kentucky. That level of knowledge was on full display last season, as Louisville swept both ends of a home-and-home series. The first Louisville win came at Syracuse, but the Cardinals – still needing to get another signature win for their NCAA Tournament hopes – pulled off a repeat win over the Orange a few weeks later in the last UL game ever played at venerable Freedom Hall. This game will be in Louisville’s new KFC Yum Center, so the Cardinals – with a raucous crowd cheering them on – could very well unleash another surprise on Mr. Boeheim and the ‘Cuse.

How The Game Will Play Out

The return of Preston Knowles will allow Louisville to spread the floor a little more at the offensive end. The Cardinals can create decent shots against the Syracuse zone. However, if Louisville doesn’t shoot really well, the prolonged absence of its interior players will matter a lot against Syracuse’s length and size. Rick Jackson is poised to have a huge day for the Orange, who will get to the rim with regularity and win on the road.
