Villanova Georgetown Betting - Georgetown Tries To Bolster Its Place In The Big East

Posted by Washington Tucker on 2/10/2014 4:16:50 AM

The Georgetown Hoyas have quietly put together a very solid season. They are trying to nail down one of the rewards for a solid season when they play the Villanova Wildcats.

Villanova Wildcats @ Georgetown Hoyas - Saturday, February 25

Sports betting line: No line

Why Villanova Will Win

When you do your homework and assess your sports bet on this game, it's worth pointing out that Georgetown is anything but an imposing kind of team. The Hoyas have done well in the Big East, but they haven't landed a lot of knockout punches this season. Coach John Thompson III's team beat a very mediocre Rutgers squad by only two points at home and topped the always-lousy DePaul Blue Demons by only eight points. Georgetown destroyed South Florida, but that result is the exception which proves the rule. Offense doesn't come easily for the Hoyas, who – as of February 17 – were averaging just 63.2 points per game in Big East competition. This is not a roster with dynamic scorers.

Jason Clark is a legitimate knockdown shooter, but he is not a slasher or all-around scorer who can devastate opposing defenses with dribble penetration or strong moves near the rim. This is a team littered with limitations, and that's why Villanova will have a definite puncher's chance to win this game. If Georgetown – Clark in particular – cannot hit the three-point shot with any degree of regularity, this will be a defensive grinder played in the 50s, and Villanova could definitely steal that type of game.

Why Georgetown Will Win

The college basketball betting experts who follow the Big East Conference are aware of one very simple truth: Villanova is an awful team on the road. The Wildcats, who made the 2009 Final Four and were a No. 2 seed in the 2010 NCAA Tournament, have drastically declined in the past two seasons. They played in the 8-versus-9 (seed) game in last year's Big Dance, and this year, they're staring at a complete absence from any postseason tournament whatsoever. Why? They can't win away from home. Villanova won just one of its first nine road games this season, an overtime triumph over St. John's on Jan. 21. This is a team with few skilled players. Maalik Wayns is the leading scorer and assist man on the roster, and without him, there’s really no one coach Jay Wright can turn to for consistent production.

A telling aspect of Villanova's weakness is that it is in the top 20 in rebounding, but does not have a frontline starter who averages at least 15 points per game. Villanova's low-post players are not fluid players; they have trouble finishing plays near the basket. It will take a fresh infusion of talent for Villanova to get better; this year’s roster just doesn't have the skill set the Wildcats need to compete for an NCAA Tournament berth.

Who Will Win

In 2009, Villanova was the far better basketball program. In 2012, Georgetown is. This game should be a big deal for both teams, but Villanova looks like a club that wants to get this season over with. Georgetown, though, is playing to wrap up a double-bye in the Big East Tournament and thereby turn this season into an even more rewarding journey. Take Georgetown at home.
