2015 College Basketball Betting – Weekly Preview

Posted by Washington Tucker on 11/17/2015 12:07:50 AM

The college basketball season has just begun. What’s on tap for the first full week of the season? Here are the three most noteworthy televised games of the week, not including Monday night’s games, which have already started.

1 – Duke vs. Kentucky (In Chicago)

The Tuesday night game between these two teams is the biggest game of the week. This is the matchup which could have taken place in last April’s national championship game. However, Wisconsin upset Kentucky to spoil the party. The Badgers played Duke in the title game. The foremost feature of these schools is that they both use one-and-done players. Duke used to be different, but last season marked a distinct shift by coach Mike Krzyzewski to the one-and-done model, with Jahlil Okafor, Justise Winslow, and Tyus Jones all helping the Blue Devils win Coach K’s fifth national championship on Tobacco Road. Duke has brought in a new freshman class, one which will try to live up to the 2015 team’s standards, but will have a very difficult time doing so.

For Kentucky, this new team will also have a steep challenge in terms of living up to what its immediate predecessor managed to do. The 2015 Kentucky team made the Final Four without losing a game. It came two games short of being the first and only 40-0 team in college basketball history. It came two wins short of being the first unbeaten college basketball national champion since Indiana in 1976. The best freshmen from that team – Karl-Anthony Towns and Devin Booker – are gone. Tyler Ulis moves into his sophomore season as a holdover, while new freshmen Skal Labissiere and Jamal Murray will try to become the new superstars for head coach John Calipari. This is a game that is not to be missed.

2 – Kansas vs. Michigan State (In Chicago)

This is a matchup of two other strong programs with great coaches. Bill Self and Tom Izzo are two of the best in the game. They will match wits in the other half of the Chicago doubleheader on Tuesday night. Kansas lost Kelly Oubre to the NBA draft, but it keeps Perry Ellis, Wayne Selden, and Brannen Greene. The major issue with the Jayhawks is that new recruit Cheick Diallo has not yet been ruled eligible. The Jayhawks are hoping that situation can be resolved to their satisfaction soon. Michigan State loses two very important players from last April’s Final Four team. Travis Trice and Branden Dawson played very specific roles for the Spartans. A deep but young roster will try to compensate.

3 – Minnesota vs. Temple (San Juan, Puerto Rico)

The Puerto Rico early season tournament starts with this quarterfinal, a matchup of teams which were seeded very highly in last season’s NIT. The Golden Gophers and the Owls are both trying to take that next step and make the NCAA tournament this season. Winning this game will be valuable in itself, but winning will also set up a better semifinal opponent, which will also help these teams in their attempts to collect better wins for March.
