Missouri, Oklahoma State Set To Renew Big 12 Acquaintance In Cotton Bowl

Posted by Blake Frazier on 2/4/2014 5:38:08 AM

When the Missouri Tigers made the move from the Big 12 to the SEC, one of the biggest concerns for their fans was how they would no longer play against some of the teams they had grown accustomed to matching up against. While the rivalry between the Tigers and Oklahoma State Cowboys wasn’t exactly fierce, they did clash several times over the years, and will get the chance to become reacquainted in the Cotton Bowl this January. Missouri has certainly shown in its first two online sports betting seasons in the SEC that it can be a legitimate championship contender, but this time around they will end their season with the chance to knock off an old Big 12 foe in order to take home some postseason hardware.

For as close as the Tigers came to winning an SEC title, the Cowboys had a much more disappointing end to their season. Oklahoma State was upset by the Oklahoma Sooners to spoil its Big 12 title hopes, and will now have to bounce back both physically and emotionally in order to avoid going home with nothing at all.

Head coach Mike Gundy was at an obvious loss for words following the Cowboys’ loss to Oklahoma, the one team they just can’t seem to get a handle on. A defense that had played so well all year allowed Sooners’ backup quarterback Blake Bell to march the field on the game-winning drive as though he was Andrew Luck, and with the home loss they once again feel the disappointment of coming out on the wrong side of Bedlam. Oklahoma State had won seven-straight until that point, but will have trouble getting back on track even with Clint Chelf and the nation’s 15th-highest scoring attack. Chelf and company are destined to put up some big numbers, but their defense will also need to step up against a quality Missouri offense.

Even in the SEC Championship game the Tigers did not slow down, as they scored 42 points in a losing cause against what many feel is a team of destiny in Auburn. James Franklin has made progress all year and is ready for the spotlight, with running back Henry Josey right beside to lead the country’s 16th-highest scoring offense. Missouri is capable of putting up points in bunches, but like Oklahoma State the question is whether or not their defense can make enough plays to win this game. The Tigers enjoyed a quality stretch of four-straight games in which they allowed 21 points or less leading up to the loss to Auburn, including a 28-21 win over Johnny Manziel and Texas A&M, so the odds are that they bounce back with a much stronger effort.

College Football Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

It may not be possible to set the online betting total for this game too high, as both offenses are capable of putting up some incredible numbers, while both defenses have struggled at times. Oklahoma State has done well to get here, but shaking off the effects of the loss to Oklahoma won’t be easy, and now they have to go up against a talented Missouri team that may have a slight edge on both sides of the ball heading in to this one.
