Ohio State Forced To Settle For Orange Bowl Date With Clemson

Posted by Ohio State Forced To Settle For Orange Bowl Date With Clemson on 2/4/2014 5:36:14 AM

The BCS bowl system has had a way of being cruel over the years. For this year’s Ohio State Buckeyes, it would have been nice to see the new playoff system adopted one year earlier. The Buckeyes won an impressive 24-straight online sports betting games before coming up short against the Michigan State Spartans in the Big Ten Championship game, and that one loss over a two-year span means missing a chance to play the Florida State Seminoles in this year’s BCS National Championship game. Ohio State instead fell to No. 7 in the country, and will settle for the opportunity to play the No. 12 Clemson Tigers in this year’s Discover Orange Bowl.

Clemson was eliminated from national title consideration much earlier, as a loss to Florida State rendered them the second-best team in the ACC, a reputation they carry in to this year’s Orange Bowl. While a conference championship would have been nice, the Tigers still have plenty of motivation as they look to make this postseason a success.

College Football Betting Preview: Clemson

Senior quarterback Tajh Boyd will look to add to his draft stock with a strong performance in the Orange Bowl, and it will be important to make a positive impression after putting up big numbers but struggling in the team’s only two losses. The Clemson offense averaged 329.3 passing yards per game and just over 40 points to rank 12th in the entire nation in both categories, but they managed just 14 and 17 points in losses to the Seminoles and South Carolina respectively. The Tigers’ defense isn’t built to carry them when the offense struggles, and it will face another tough challenge against the Buckeyes. That could mean another shootout, so Boyd and company must be prepared.

College Football Betting Preview: Ohio State

Ohio State owns the fourth-ranked rushing attack in the country, with senior running back Carlos Hyde leading a ground game that averaged just over 317 yards per game. Quarterback Braxton Miller also has the legs to make plays in the running game, and to buy time to find receivers if nobody is open. The offense stalled somewhat against a tough Michigan State defense, but they have the weapons to put up big numbers against a Clemson defense that has struggled against top offenses. The Ohio State defense allowed just 21.3 points per game this year, but gave up 34 against the Spartans and another poor performance could result in this game being a blowout.

College Football Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

Both of these offenses have the potential to put up some big totals, and there isn’t much about their respective defenses to expect this not to be another online betting shootout. The Buckeyes will try to bounce back and earn some postseason hardware after the disappointment of the Big Ten Championship game, but Clemson will be just as hungry and should be able to cover the number in a game they could very well win outright.
