Auburn Alabama Betting – ‘Bama Ends Tigers’ BCS title hopes, But Can’t Cover Spread

Online betting players should gear up for one of the biggest games of the season, as the “Iron Bowl” has national-title implications this Friday when the Auburn Tigers head to the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Tigers have run over everyone in their path, but Alabama will be ready for them, ready enough to take the win. However, Auburn’s Heisman candidate will keep them from cover the spread in your sportsbook.

  • What: NCAA football betting
  • When: Friday, November 26th, 2:30 PM ET
  • Where: Bryant-Denny Stadium, Tuscaloosa, AL
  • Pick: Auburn +4

What’s On The Line

The No.2 Tigers (11-0, 7-0) were idle, while the No.11 Crimson Tide might as well have been, routing Georgia State 63-7, setting up one of the most anticipated editions of the “Iron Bowl” in years. The Tigers are looking to keep their national-title chances alive, while the Crimson Tide would love nothing more than to keep their bitter rivals out of the picture, and it would also improve their chances of a BCS at-large bid. Oh, and calling them “bitter rivals” may be the understatement of the year: their programs, and especially their fan bases, HATE each other.

Offensive Matchups: Auburn Alabama Betting

As Cam Newton goes, so go the Tigers’ No.6-ranked offense: no one is more important to his team. Newton is still at the center of a pay-for-play scandal, but that didn’t stop him from playing against Georgia two weeks ago, and unless something epic happens, he’ll suit up for this game. Newton needs to keep getting support from Michael Dyer and Onterio McCalebb on the ground, because this tough Alabama defense is going to key on him. Of course, everyone else has this year and hasn’t been able to stop Newton, who can also throw it better than you think.

Alabama rolled against Georgia State in what was largely a glorified practice, and the reserves played most of the game, which saved the starters for this week. The Crimson Tide will have Trent Richardson back to spell Mark Ingram in the backfield, but the key to this game could be the duo of quarterback Greg McElroy and receiver Julio Jones. The Tigers have a terrible secondary, and they’ve shown that they can have trouble against the big pass play.

Betting Edge: Auburn

Defensive Matchups: Auburn Alabama Betting

As we just said, the Tigers aren’t good against the pass at all, coming in 100th, and their 11th-ranked run defense is misleading because teams won’t bother running it if they can throw it. Defensive tackle Nick Fairley is a monster, but he is the only player on that side of the ball for Auburn that anyone should worry about. Safety Zac Etheridge is great against the run, but that doesn’t help a secondary that is brutal in the air. They’re going to have their hands full against Alabama’s Jones, one of the most talented receivers in the nation.

The Crimson Tide are ranked seventh in the country defensively, and they’re also third in points allowed, but they’re not the intimidating group that they were last year. They forced five turnovers against Georgia State, and Alabama is now seventh in turnover margin. Linebacker Dont’a Hightower is the leader of this unit, and the onus will be on him to spy on Newton to keep him in the pocket. The Alabama secondary has to be careful as well, as Auburn can pass it as well, but coach Nick Saban will have some plans cooked up for Friday.

Notable Injuries: Auburn Alabama Betting

Auburn doesn’t seem to have any major injuries, and the biggest story is whether or not the NCAA will come down on Newton for the allegations levied against him. If he can’t play, Auburn is done.

Richardson (knee) has missed the last two games, but he’ll be back for this game. Guard Barrett Jones (foot) is questionable for the Crimson Tide.

Betting Edge: Auburn

Outlook and Pick: Auburn Alabama Betting

NCAA football betting odds have the Crimson Tide favored by four points at home, and they own a 40-33-1 record in the “Iron Bowl” against Auburn, who has won four of the last five in Tuscaloosa, but they got rocked 36-0 in 2008. It’s tough to gauge Auburn’s chances because they haven’t gone on the road much, winning at the Mississippi State Bulldogs and the Kentucky Wildcats by three points, and even though they won at Ole Miss by 20, the defense still looked bad. Newton will get his yards and points against Alabama; he’s the best player in the country and you can’t really stop him, you can only hope to contain him. But the Auburn defense is awful and we don’t think they can stop Alabama. McElroy has shown in the past that he can carry the load when he has to, and we have more faith in the Crimson Tide getting a stop, so take them straight up. But as for the spread, we’re going to take Auburn: this will go down to a field goal, which will mess up a lot of sports betting players.

Blake’s Pick: Auburn
