The Four Best Bowl Games Of The Week

Posted by Blake Frazier on 1/2/2015 9:08:21 PM

In college football, the big bowls have arrived, and there’s even a very high-quality matchup on the day after the College Football Playoff semifinals. Here’s what’s in store for you:

Cotton Bowl: Michigan State Spartans vs. Baylor Bears (In Arlington)

– Thursday, January 1

When the College Football Playoff field was announced, the Big 12’s two best teams, Baylor and TCU, were snubbed in favor of a Big Ten team, league champion Ohio State. The Buckeyes got the fourth and final spot alongside Florida State, Oregon, and Alabama. The Big 12 was left out in the cold. Now, Big 12 champion Baylor gets to say something about that matter, as the Bears take on the Big Ten’s second-best team, the Michigan State Spartans, who went 10-2 in 2014. This is a game that’s going to mean a lot to both teams and both conferences. What adds some intrigue to the game is that Michigan State defensive coordinator Pat Narduzzi, a man closely associated with the rise of the MSU program over the past few years, is going to be the Pittsburgh Panthers’ head coach when this game is over. This will be an emotional game for Michigan State, not just Baylor. It should be a cracker of a game.

Rose Bowl: Florida State Seminoles vs. Oregon Ducks (In Pasadena)

– Thursday, January 1

This is a game which is loaded with obvious significance, but it’s also an historic meeting in the annals of college football. There have been only two previous occasions in which two active Heisman Trophy winners have played each other. The first time was when USC played Oklahoma in the 2005 Orange Bowl. USC Heisman winner Matt Leinart (2004) played Oklahoma Heisman winner Jason White (2003). Then, in the 2009 BCS National Championship Game, Florida Heisman winner Tim Tebow (2007) played Oklahoma Heisman winner Sam Bradford (2008). This game marks the third such instance, as 2013 Heisman winner Jameis Winston of Florida State goes up against 2014 Heisman winner Marcus Mariota of Oregon. This is a game with superstar players in college football’s most famous stadium. It’s going to be an amazing scene in Pasadena.

Sugar Bowl: Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Alabama Crimson Tide (In New Orleans)

– Thursday, January 1

It’s Urban Meyer of Ohio State versus Nick Saban of Alabama. It’s a matchup of two coaches who have combined to win six national championships in their careers. The winner will get a chance to push that total to seven in the College Football Playoff Championship Game on Jan. 12. All eyes will be on the quarterbacks in this game. Ohio State’s Cardale Jones has just one career start to his credit, but it was a 59-0 win over Wisconsin over three weeks ago. Blake Sims has been a great home-field quarterback, and he played well against Missouri on a neutral field in the SEC Championship Game. Now, though, he’ll have to face the pressure of being the favorite in a playoff semifinal.

Alamo Bowl: Kansas State Wildcats vs. UCLA Bruins (In San Antonio)

– Friday, January 2

This is the quietly good matchup of the week. These are both top-15 teams with a lot to prove after losing steam at the end of the regular season. The Big 12 has been knocked around in bowl games, so you know Kansas State wants to prove a point. UCLA lost the Pac-12 South on the final day of the regular season, so the Bruins would love to compensate for that stumble by winning here.
