2009 Army Black Knights Betting Recap

Army’s online betting odds weren’t great to kick off the 2009 campaign, but they opened up the season with a 27-14 win at Eastern Michigan, before falling at home to Duke.  The Black Knights gave their home fans something to cheer about with a win over Ball State, then they fell at Iowa State and lost by one point at Tulane.  Army pulled out a 16-13 overtime win at home over Vanderbilt, then went on a three-game skid, falling at Temple and Air Force with a home loss to Rutgers sandwiched in there.  The Black Knights got back to .500 with wins at home against VMI and a road victory at North Texas, but the season ended on a low note with a 17-3 loss to Navy, falling for the eighth straight time to their rival.

The Black Knights were 117th in the nation offensively, but only because they were unbalanced and threw the ball 161 times….all season.  They were 16th in rushing, thanks to quarterback Trent Steelman and running back Patrick Mealy, while Alejandro Villaneuva was the main receiving threat, if you could call it that.  The defense held their own, coming in 16th in the country, and they were especially good against the pass, coming in third.  The defense had to be good or else the Black Knights wouldn’t have had many opportunities to stay in games, much less win a game.

2010 Preview To Bet Army Black Knights

Betting on the Black Knights’ NCAA football betting odds for 2010 may not be the smartest thing as they’re an independent, along with Notre Dame and Navy, so they won’t be winning any conferences, so the best bet is a bowl game, which Army hasn’t seen since 1996.  Steelman was only a freshman and had to grasp the difficult option offense, but he got better as the year went on and should be better.  Villaneuva is back, and he’ll see a few double teams as the opposition won’t be afraid of any other receivers other than him.  Mealy returns to the backfield, and fullback Jarred Hassin adds a physical element to the offense.  Defensively, the Black Knights had some key players injured during the offseason, and that could affect them, especially early in the season because being hurt cuts into your preparation time.

The Black Knights open the season at Eastern Michigan before welcoming Hawaii and North Texas to town, and then they have three road games in their next four at Duke, Tulane and Rutgers, with a home game against Temple mixed in there.  The Black Knights will host VMI on Halloween weekend before Air Force comes to town, then Army will travel to Kent State before a neutral-site meeting with Notre Dame at the new Yankee Stadium.  Finally, the Black Knights have another chance to end their losing streak to Navy when the two meet at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field.

If you had to bet on Army to reach a bowl game this year after coming up just short last season, you can go ahead and do so.  The offense will be better now that Steelman has another year of experience, and it’s not like he did he was awful in his freshman year, but you could see him making some rookie mistakes.  The defense may not be as good as last year, but there won’t be a substantial drop-off.  A key would be to improve the brutal special teams, and that would take pressure off the rest of the team.  We’re banking on Army for a six-win season, and they have the ability to grab you a sports betting upset or two.
