2009 Missouri Tigers Betting Recap

Online betting players didn’t think much of Mizzou’s chances last year as the Tigers were young and bleeding a lot of new players into the lineup. They reeled off four straight wins to begin the season, including their fifth consecutive win over Illinois in the “Arch Rivalry”, but they ran into trouble when the competition was ramped up. Against three ranked opponents, Nebraska, Oklahoma State and Texas, the Tigers were thumped by an average of 32.5 points, including a 41-7 rout at the hands of the then-No.2 Longhorns at home. A tough 40-32 loss at home to Baylor essentially ended their hopes of snatching the Big 12 North, but to their credit, the Tigers won their final three regular-season games, highlighted by a last-second field goal in a 41-39 win over rival Kansas in the “Border War”. The season would end on a low with a 35-13 loss to Navy in the Texas Bowl, but all things considered, Mizzou had a very solid year with plenty to build on.

Blaine Gabbert grasped the spread offense that Mizzou runs quickly, and the Tigers’ aerial attack was 14th in the country. Danario Alexander led the nation in receiving yards in his senior season, while Derrick Washington took a step back after a 1,000-yard season in 2008. However, as well as the Tigers threw the ball, they couldn’t stop their opponents from doing the same as they were 104th in pass defense, allowing just over 25 points per game. The 385 yards they gave up to Navy was more about Navy’s option than the Mizzou defense, as most teams just threw it on the Tigers.

2010 Preview To Bet Missouri Tigers

This year’s edition of the Tigers should have solid NCAA football betting odds as they return a whopping 19 starters, including nine on each side of the ball. The offensive line was good last year, and four starters will be back to protect Gabbert, who had a bad ankle for most of last season. Even though Alexander has graduated, the Tigers have depth and experience to pick up the slack at wide receiver. The defense should be better, especially in the secondary as Mizzou has experience. They really need to take advantage of the pass rush sparked by end Aldon Smith, who had 11.5 sacks last year, which was a school benchmark. The Tigers are also insanely deep at linebacker.

The non-conference portion of the schedule is manageable, starting with the “Arch Rivalry” with Illinois in St. Louis, while McNeese State, San Diego State and Miami (Ohio) all come to Faurot Field. The Tigers open up the Big 12 schedule against Colorado before heading to College Station to face Texas A&M, followed by a visit from Oklahoma. Back-to-back road games at Nebraska and Texas Tech will likely decide the Tigers’ fate before a home game against Kansas State, a trip to Iowa State, and the annual “Border War” with the hated Kansas Jayhawks.

The Tigers have all the tools to at least equal their eight-win season of 2009, as Gabbert appears to be healthy now, but the receivers need to step up with Alexander gone. On defense, it’s all about the secondary. There will be a lot of pressure on cornerback Kevin Rutland, a senior, to rally the troops in the secondary. The Tigers allowed 34 points in their four losses, and that sort of performance won’t put them above Nebraska, the defending Big 12 North champions and prohibitive favorites heading into the season. Mizzou shouldn’t finish any lower than second in their division, and if the Tigers can settle down at the back, their sports betting odds to win the Big 12 will improve throughout the season.
