2009 Pittsburgh Panthers Betting Recap

Online betting experts had to be pleasantly surprised by the way the Pittsburgh Panthers performed in 2009. For years, this Big East program has played far below its capabilities. Despite the talents of players such as running back LeSean McCoy, Pitt football found a way to lose multiple games it had no business dropping. An ugly loss to Bowling Green marred the 2008 season, as did a terrible 54-point hemorrhage on the part of its defense in a miserable loss to Rutgers. Too many sluggish Saturdays held this program back.

In 2009, a lot of positive forward movements took place. The season still ended with a crushing disappointment, but the program established itself well for the future.

Pittsburgh lost only one of its first 10 games, a fourth-quarter collapse against North Carolina State in September. Past Pitt teams would have folded after that early-season stomach punch, but this crew just kept coming. Playing with more hunger and attention to detail than it had been able to demonstrate in the past, the Panthers dug out a few close games – particularly a last-second win against Connecticut and a road win at Rutgers in prime time – to maintain Big East title hopes until the final day of the regular season. And when Pitt raced to a 31-10 first-half lead against Cincinnati in a de facto Big East championship game, it looked as though coach Dave Wannstedt – a Pitt alum – was going to bring a huge piece of hardware to his alma mater.

Then, the dream died. A 99-yard kickoff return by Cincinnati’s Mardy Gilyard began to turn the tide just before halftime. Two quarters later, Pittsburgh’s go-ahead touchdown with 1:36 left in regulation was overshadowed by a botched PAT. When Cincy marched downfield and scored a touchdown with 33 seconds remaining, the Bearcats kicked the extra point and stunned Pitt, 45-44. An amazing season was produced by the Panthers, but it fell one point short of a complete success. Still, this is a program that’s changing its reputation as we speak.

2010 Preview To Bet Pittsburgh Panthers

NCAA football betting junkies should be picking Pittsburgh quite often in 2010. The sports betting world should embrace the Panthers not just for what they have, but for what the rest of the Big East lacks. True, Pitt will no longer have the services of quarterback Bill Stull, who has graduated, but then again, West Virginia will be breaking in a brand-new signal caller as well. Cincinnati lost its major playmaker – the aforementioned Gilyard – and more importantly, former coach Brian Kelly is now at Notre Dame. Cincinnati won the last two Big East crowns, but the Bearcats figure to tumble out of contention this season. West Virginia has an outside chance at glory, and Connecticut – with its combination of defensive excellence and depth at running back – probably rates as the second choice in the Big East.

Pitt, though, is the clear favorite. Two words tell the tale: Dion Lewis.

The sophomore had a stunning freshman season in 2009. Lewis racked up 1,799 rushing yards, second in Pitt football history to only one man: Tony Dorsett. You might have heard of him. Lewis is a dynamic breakaway back who also possesses strength between the tackles. As long as Pitt gets efficient, low-turnover quarterback play, the Panthers – who have a young linebacking corps returning and will have most of their 2009 defense intact for 2010 – will be well-positioned to win a BCS bowl berth this time around.
