2009 UCLA Bruins Betting Recap

Online betting players may have given UCLA a consideration or two after their first three games in 2009, as they began with a 33-14 over San Diego State, and then they went to Tennessee and pulled out a four-point win over the Volunteers. Kansas State was their third straight victim, and the Bruins were flying high. However, they fell back to earth with five losses in a row, beginning with an eight-point loss at Stanford, before then-No.13 Oregon came to town and left with a 24-16 win. The Bruins were rolled 45-26 by California before road losses at Arizona and Oregon State, but they showed some signs of life to end the season, winning four of their last five. Tough wins over Washington and Arizona State sandwiched a romp at Washington State, and after their regular season ended with a 28-7 loss at USC, the Bruins came away with a 30-21 win in the EagleBank Bowl over Temple. If not for that brutal midseason stretch, how high could the Bruins have flown?

Their unbalanced offense was a major reason that UCLA were inconsistent last year as they were 52nd in the country through the air, but 97th on the ground. Kevin Prince had a solid freshman year under center and should be better in 2010, but he had to be solid as fellow frosh Johnathan Franklin and Derrick Coleman didn’t offer a home-run threat coming out of the backfield. The defense was 32nd in the nation, led by Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year Brian Price, and two other Bruins made the conference first team. But the defense couldn’t carry an anemic offense that was 94th in the country in scoring.

2010 Preview To Bet UCLA Bruins

Betting on the Bruins’ NCAA football betting odds in 2010 is going to largely depend on the progress of Prince, and it certainly doesn’t hurt that he has his top six receiving targets from last year back on the team. Franklin should also improve in his second season on campus for the Bruins, but the offensive line also has to be better blocking for both the ground game and the aerial attack. The key receiver to watch is Nelson Rosario, who is a physical specimen at 6’5”, but still needs to work on things like running routes. The defense, as we said, lost a few very important contributors like Price, and he’s going to leave a huge hole in the middle of the UCLA defensive line, a hole that will take multiple players to fill. Akeem Ayers returned a pick for a touchdown in the bowl win over Temple, but he doesn’t have much help at linebacker with the losses of Reggie Carter and Kyle Bosworth. Safety Rahim Moore is back to lead the secondary after topping the nation with 10 picks, but the loss of cornerback Alterraun Verner will hurt.

The Bruins certainly didn’t make it easy on themselves when it comes to the non-conference schedule, which is another reason that betting on the Bruins could be tough. They kick off the season at Kansas State before their home opener against Stanford, and then the Bruins will welcome high-scoring Houston to town before travelling to Austin to face Texas, who spurned the Pac-10’s alignment advances in the offseason. The Bruins get a bit of a break by hosting Washington State, but then there’s back-to-back trips to Cal and Oregon. Arizona and Oregon State will make the trip to Los Angeles before the Bruins head out to Washington and Arizona State, and of course, there’s the annual season finale against USC, and the Bruins will be hosting “The Battle of L.A.”.

Last year, it was all defense and no offense for the Bruins. This year, it looks to be the other way around as the Bruins lost some major pieces on defense, and while they have depth to replace them, it’s not quality depth. The offense should be better with Prince and others gaining another year of experience, but they may find themselves in the occasional shootout because of the defense. Sports betting players should definitely check the weekly totals because UCLA will put up some points, but they’ll also give up a few. Beware of UCLA’s sports betting odds in 2010.
