Betting Baylor Bears Predictions – Bears Will Find Out What Life Is Like Without RGIII

Posted by Blake Frazier on 7/24/2012 6:22:05 PM

Online betting players had to start paying attention to Baylor after their Heisman-winning quarterback took the country by storm, but the Bears will take a big step backwards in 2012 through no fault of their own; they’re just not as good as last year’s team and they don’t have a gamebreaker on offense, while their defense isn’t good enough to carry them.

Head Coach: Art Briles (5th year)
Offensive Coordinator: Randy Clements
Defensive Coordinator: Philip Montgomery
Stadium: Floyd Casey Stadium, Waco, TX
Capacity: 50,000
National Championships: 0

It’s the first year in the post-Robert Griffin era…not Robert T. Griffin, although the starting guard will be missed as well. Quarterback Robert Griffin III stormed to the Heisman Trophy and turned the Bears into a national must-watch, but now the Bears will have to make do without their dual-threat pivot, and there is a lot of pressure on Nick Florence. He’s a senior so he has been around and knows what the Bears want to do, but he has to make sure that he doesn’t try to be RGIII, who is a physical freak. Florence will have three linemen back and three receivers that will have to make up for the loss of Kendall Wright, who had 1,663 yards and 14 touchdowns last season.

Also, Baylor will have to replace running back Terrance Ganaway, who ran for 1,547 yards and benefitted heavily from Griffin’s presence in the spread option. There is a lot of production to replace from a unit that was second in the country, and college football betting sharps can’t expect Baylor to keep it up.

Grade: C

The Baylor offense needed to be great in 2011 because the defense was absolutely awful and that may be being generous. Baylor was 116th in total defense and 118th against the pass and even if they have eight starters back, will they improve at all? The entire secondary is back, so it is possible that they won’t be so atrocious in 2012, but they could be in coverage for a long time as the Bears were 93rd in sacks and their top two sackers from last year are gone.

Somehow, their defensive backs managed to get an Honorable Mention in the Big 12, which tells you the shape of the secondaries in the conference and how much they like to pass. The secondary will be under a lot of pressure in 2012, especially with the likes of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech throwing the pigskin around.

Grade: D

Special Teams

The special teams may actually be the most solid part of the Bears this season, with all of their returners back on campus, although Baylor was only 63rd in punt returns and 96th in kickoff returns. They’ll have to improve because the defense needs all the help they can.

Kicker Aaron Jones and punter Spencer Roth are both back, so at least there is continuity on this unit, and they’re going to have added pressure this year as there are actually expectations in Waco and the special teams will have a lot to do with their performance.

Grade: B-

Baylor’s college football betting odds fell when RGIII announced that he was going pro, although that was the worst-kept secret in football. The Bears were a top-10 team and national-title contender with him, but now, the Bears have to figure how to proceed in the next era without their superstar quarterback, who brought a lot of positive attention to the program.

Still, the carpet will be snatched from under the Bears this season, simply because of the loss of their quarterback. They should improve throughout the year as it’ll be a shock without Griffin, but they’ll eventually scratch and claw their way to a bowl game. The secondary will be good enough to hold on for a weak front seven, and they’ll be a decent team, but Baylor isn’t going to stun any sports betting players by winning the Big 12.
