Top 5 Highest Paid College Football Head Coaches

Posted by Blake Frazier on 5/10/2013 5:58:04 PM

It has to be said that sport betting oddsin college football often depend on the quality of the coach on the sideline. Getting and then retaining a quality coach is a matter of prestige and of the money that is associated with such prestige. The best college football programs are willing and able to throw big bucks at their coaches. When football betting is involved, you have to keep an eye on the money.

If you care for online casino games, you know that the stakes are high in college football coaching, and so it should be no surprise that the University of Alabama – which has won three national championships in the past four seasons – has continually bumped up the salary of head coach Nick Saban to make sure that he’s the top-paid coach in the United States. Saban’s base salary and what is loosely termed “other pay” totals just under $5.5 million, roughly $100,000 more than the second-paid coach in the land, Texas boss Mack Brown.

These figures come from a USA Today report from November 19 of last year, co-authored by Erik Brady, Steve Berkowitz, and Jodi Upton. Bob Stoops, the immensely successful head coach of the University of Oklahoma football team, is third with a salary-and-other-pay package of just over $4.5 million. Urban Meyer, the head coach at Ohio State, makes $4.3 million in base pay. Les Miles of Louisiana State University makes just under $3.9 million.

It has to be noted in all of this that the above numbers do not take into account performance bonuses and other forms of bonuses, such as ones that kick in due to staying at the school or meeting certain other stipulations of contracts. Coaches’ agents load up their agreements with these incentives, increasing take-home pay beyond the base salary each season. One should also take care to realize that the compensation totals for coaches do not include various perks associated with the job, such as a provided car and other items that make it easier to live life on a daily basis.

What coaches make from football camps and other self-staged events also falls outside base compensation. Certain media obligations fall under the job description of a coach, but in the same breath, it has to be pointed out that a coach can use his influence and visibility to secure his own commercial endorsements and thereby add to his coaching salary.

For more perspective on this topic, here’s a brief excerpt of the USA Today report cited above:

“Coaches' pay has even outpaced the pay of corporate executives, who have drawn the ire of Congress and the public because of their staggering compensation packages. Between 2007 and 2011, CEO pay — including salary, stock, options, bonuses and other pay — rose 23%, according to Equilar, an executive compensation data firm. In that same period, coaches' pay increased 44%.

“Alabama's Nick Saban is the highest paid at $5.5 million, and he is one of four Southeastern Conference coaches among the top eight. Texas head coach Mack Brown, of the Big 12, is the second-highest, pulling in $5.4 million.

“This rapid and continuing escalation in coaches' pay comes at a time when instructional spending has declined at many public schools because of shrinking state education budgets. The rise in assistant coaches' salaries might just open up another front in the education vs. athletics tug of war on campuses across the USA.”
