Boise State Broncos Betting Tips – Broncos Could Take Step Back In 2012

Posted by Blake Frazier on 7/3/2012 4:58:43 PM

Online betting players are used to seeing Boise State roll through the Mountain West, but in their last year in the conference, they’ll have to deal with a ton of personnel changes and it won’t be a walk in the park for the Broncos as they get ready to bolt to the Big East.

Head Coach: Chris Petersen (7th year)
Offensive Coordinator: Robert Prince
Defensive Coordinator: Pete Kwiatkowski
Stadium: Lyle Smith Field at Bronco Stadium, Boise, ID
Capacity: 37,000
National Championships: 0

Offense

No team in the country may miss a player more than Boise State will miss Kellen Moore, who graduated with the most wins of any starting quarterback ever in college basketball. The Broncos also have to find a replacement for running back Doug Martin, but the void that Moore leaves under center can’t be understated. Joe Southwick has backed up Moore for two years, so he knows the system, but does he have the laser-like accuracy that Moore did? The Broncos do return three of their top five receivers, so that’s a start. But the line also has a few holes in it that could hamper their development, so it’s going to be an interesting season for Chris Petersen, who has a 73-6 record since taking over at Boise State.

Grade: C

Defense

This unit could be the real key to Boise State’s college football betting chances as the Broncos have been perennially one of the top defenses in the country, but up front, they have a few questions, particularly on the ends. The middle of the line should be in good shape, but the Broncos may struggle to get pressure on the opposing quarterback. Boise State should be strong at the back end of their 4-2-5 defense, especially at the cornerback position, and they’ll have to be because of the problems on the line. The secondary was ravaged by injuries last year and the defense had to depend on the line, but now, the situations are reversed and the secondary has to carry the load. As this unit goes, so go the Broncos.

Special Teams

Boise State was one of the top return teams in the country in 2011, ranking 18th in punt returns and 30th in kickoff returns. Receiver Mitch Burroughs was the primary return guy and he should be again, but he’ll also be taking more responsibility in the passing game, so the Broncos may look to take something off his plate and get a younger guy to handle the returns. However, the Broncos may need field position more than ever, so Petersen has a decision to make. The Broncos were 35th in net punting, and will have to draft in a new punter, while Boise State has two good kickers with Dan Goodale and Michael Frisna, but both have also had their troubles in high-pressure situations. Field goals have been the bane of Boise State’s existence over the last two years and they may have thrown away two opportunities to play for the national title because of them. The Broncos can’t afford those missteps in 2012.

Grade: C

Prediction

The Broncos are rated at +6600 to win the national title in their last season in the Mountain West before moving to the Big East, and they won’t be the juggernaut that we’re used to seeing. The season opens up with a visit to Michigan State, which has an excellent defense and will be all over Southwick. In fact, the Broncos have three very tough opponents in their first five games in Michigan State, Brigham Young and Southern Miss, with two of those games coming on the road. They still have enough talent to probably win the Mountain West, but they won’t be dominating teams like they’re used to.

You can’t lose as much experience and talent as Boise State has and expect to compete for the national title, so the Broncos should be relieved if they can manage to close out their time in the Mountain West with a championship. However, you don’t have to bother with their BCS title odds in your sports betting book.
