Clemson vs Georgia Tech Odds - Georgia Tech triple-option will make Clemson dizzy

Posted by Blake Frazier on 4/17/2012 1:40:47 PM
football lines Georgia Tech crept up on online betting players last year with a vaunted rushing attack out of the triple-option, and nine starters are back to improve upon 2008. The Yellow Jackets will host Clemson on Thursday in a nationally-televised contest, and with so much experience returning on offense, the Tigers will be toothless when trying to slow down Georgia Tech.

Clemson vs Georgia Tech odds: List The Favorite -3

  • WHAT: College football betting
  • WHEN: Thursday, September 10, 7:30 PM ET
  • WHERE: Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field, Atlanta, GA

  • PICK: Georgia Tech -5

Clemson vs Georgia Tech odds maker breakdown: What’s On The Line
The Tigers got rolled last year by Alabama in the opening week and never recovered, finishing 7-6 on the season. The Yellow Jackets were one of the surprise teams of 2008, but getting destroyed 38-3 in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl by LSU surely left a sour taste in their mouths. With a top-15 preseason ranking, Georgia Tech expectations are high for college football betting players in Atlanta.

Betting Edge: Georgia Tech

Clemson vs Georgia Tech odds maker breakdown: Offense
Clemson rushed for 202 yards in a 37-14 whipping of Middle Tennessee State, overcoming a subpar performance by freshman Kyle Parker, who was 9-of-20 for 159 yards and two touchdowns. But the Tigers also got a big showing from its special-teams units, returning a kickoff and punt back for touchdowns. The Yellow Jackets’ triple-option offense is back, racking up 335 yards on the ground in a 37-17 romp over Jacksonville State. Josh Nesbitt passed for 141 yards and a touchdown, while adding another 93 yards and a major on the ground. However, Georgia State must clean up their three fumbles.

Betting Edge: Georgia Tech

Clemson vs Georgia Tech odds maker breakdown: Defense
The Tigers forced three turnovers against Middle Tennessee State, but the Blue Raiders also converted nine of their 20 third-down attempts. The Yellow Jackets didn’t do anything fancy while forcing a pair of turnovers against Jacksonville State, and they were solid on third down, stopping the Gamecocks on nine of 15 opportunities. Stopping teams on third down is a great way to keep your defense fresh and boost your offensive opportunities, which will raise your sports betting chances.

Betting Edge: Georgia Tech

Clemson vs Georgia Tech odds maker breakdown: Notable Injuries
The Tigers got a scare from running back C.J. Spiller, who didn’t play the second half of the Middle Tennessee State game due to a lower-body injury. Spiller had run a kickoff back 96 yards to open the game, and he was hurt in a 50-yard punt return, and losing him would hurt the Tigers’ ground game as well as their special teams. Clemson staffers are saying that wasn’t serious, but it’s still something to watch for. Georgia Tech running back Roddy Jones didn’t play last week due to a wrist injury, but he should be fine for this game, and the Yellow Jackets are very deep in the backfield anyway.

Betting Edge: Georgia Tech

Clemson vs Georgia Tech betting breakdown: Outlook and Pick
Clemson will be out to avenge last year’s 21-17 loss to the Yellow Jackets in which they committed six turnovers, including four picks. They did pretty well against Georgia Tech’s triple-option offense, but now they’re headed to “The Flats,” where they’ve dropped three of their last five meetings. The Yellow Jackets have won seven of their last nine at home, and their tricky offense is usually better in front of their home fans, which is why they’re 5-point favorites on Thursday. If Spiller isn’t 100%, it could turn into a romp. Even if he is, though, the Yellow Jackets will put up enough points to cover the spread.
