College Football Betting: Bowl Game Totals

Posted by The Wiesguy on 12/14/2015 9:12:20 PM

During the bowl season totals often are a big of an afterthought. Yes even during the season they do not get as much action as the spread but the dynamics of the bowls are such that make the prediction of whether a game will be high or low scoring that much more challenging. Does extra preparation mean better execution? Will it be an advantage for both teams similarly? Not to mention whether a coach is moving on, or a coordinator, or both. Here is a look at some games where the total seems a little off to me.

Saturday December 26
New Era Pinstripe Bowl

Indiana Hoosiers vs. Duke Blue Devils
Over 67

This B10/ACC matchup is between two programs who definitely put offense first. The Blue Devils may have lost their OC but I don’t think they are going to change much with David Cutcliffe still running things. They have become a new breeding ground for offensive coaching talent. At Indiana their defense is a sieve but their offense has been very good since Kevin Wilson arrived. Neither of these teams plays much defense and that is not going to change after the layoff. If anything the tackling might be that much less crisp. They should be more than halfway there by halftime.

Wednesday December 30

Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl

Louisville Cardinals vs. Texas A&M Aggies
Over 50.5

The Aggies might not know who they want their QB to be long term but you can bet Kevin Sumlin and crew are getting whoever their guy is ready for this one. Their scoring was down this year but only against SEC opponents who have the right kind of players to slow them down. The Cardinals were not an exceptionally strong defensive team this year as they are leaning back to the offensive strength of Bobby Petrino. In their last four games they scored at least 34 points showing which way this team is trending. Both of these teams will hit that number making this an easy over.

Holiday Bowl

Wisconsin Badgers vs. USC Trojans

Over 50.5

This has not been a very good season for either of these programs, especially USC which had limited playoff aspirations. What they don’t have is limited talent and on a clean field with an outgoing senior QB I expect it all to show. USC will score a lot in this one. Their biggest challenges have been on defense and they might not want to be as physical as is needed to slow down Wisconsin, even in a down year. Look for both teams to creep into the thirties or for UC to dominate 45-10. Either way you win.

Saturday January 2

Taxslayer Bowl

Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Georgia Bulldogs

Over 41.5

This is the second lowest total on the board. PSU finished with a whimper and I think they have to do something dramatic to make it possible for future pro quarterback Christian Hackenberg to stay. That means opening it up and with a healthy roster and extra time to prepare they should have some success. Georgia is in a state of flux right now but there is talent there and I think they will be focused on offense leading into this one as well. Their defense is good. One team only needs to break 20 for this one to be a go. I think we will see that.
