College Football Week: Championship Week Preview

Posted by The Wiesguy on 11/30/2015 8:32:51 PM

This is Championship Week for college football. There are seven title games beginning with the MAC on Friday and closing with the ACC and Big Ten on Saturday night. I am going to break it up over a couple of articles and can think of no better way to do it than chronologically. Just because there are fewer games doesn’t mean there is less action.

MAC Championship Game

Bowling Green Falcons vs. Northern Illinois Huskies

Friday December 4

Ford Field - Detroit, Michigan

Falcons -10, 70.5

This was looking like the year the Rockets were going to blast through but things have not gone as they would have liked in the second half so here we are again with Northern Illinois in the title game (four way tie that they won). The change is they are a significant underdog to a pretty good Bowling Green team. I see this as a huge buying opportunity on the Huskies who are 3-0 as an underdog this season and are one of the most balanced teams in college football. Slowing down the Falcons won’t be easy but this one finishes within one score not two.

AAC Championship Game

Temple Owls vs. Houston Cougars

Saturday December 5

TDECU Stadium - Houston, Texas

Cougars -6.5, 57

This game could have had some high drama but neither of these programs could stay undefeated to make it must watch TV. The Cougars have to stay up being at home after walloping Navy in a play in game. They are a decided favourite and for good reason as they get to host. These programs missed each other this season but the Cougars beat them in 2014. Both teams are better this year. Take Houston at home as long as it stays under seven points.

SEC Championship Game

Florida Gators vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

Saturday December 5

Georgia Dome - Atlanta, Georgia

Crimson Tide -17, 40.5

This game has huge playoff implications. If Alabama wins they return but if they don’t it opens up a spot for somebody. Obviously that number shows how unlikely that scenario is mostly because Florida is so inept on offense. This has all the makings of a defensive battle with Bama hitting just enough big plays to win easily. I think Florida will keep it close and those are 17 very big points. Alabama might not even score that many winning something like 14-3. Take the Gators.

Mountain West Championship Game

Air Force Falcons vs. San Diego State Aztecs

Saturday December 5

Qualcomm Stadium - San Diego, California

Aztecs -6.5, 51

All season long I have called the Falcons a sleeper in the MWC and here they are in title game and underdogs again - they are 3-1 in that role this season. I get why the Aztecs are the fave: perfect conference record, been dominating, game is at home but I am not convinced they are that much better. Both teams will look to run the ball and both can be hard to stop. I am going to stay with Air Force and take them plus the points.
