2015 College Football Betting – Weekly College Football Preview

Posted by Blake Frazier on 10/5/2015 9:51:35 PM

The college football season moves into week six. What are the best TV games? What games are the most ideal opportunities for making a good pick? Here are four contests you can evaluate, so that you can consider your options:

1 – California Golden Bears @ Utah Utes

This is the biggest game of the week in the Pac-12, and it’s also a game between the only two Pac-12 teams without a loss. It’s not so much a game in which both teams have to win, but the winner will certainly get an advantage over the rest of the league and the division in which it competes (California in the Pac-12 North, Utah in the South). The main battle in this game is the one between California’s offense and Utah’s defense. The Golden Bears will come to Salt Lake City trying to solve a Utah defense which is great at getting pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Cal signal caller Jared Goff is noted for being able to make the quick read and the equally quick throw against pressure. This could defuse the Utah pass rush, but Goff needs to be able to make the right decision every time, and he will probably need to hit a few long balls instead of merely staying with checkdowns against the Utes. It will be a much tougher game for Cal if it can’t get a few really long plays on offense to reduce the level of the burden ahead. Utah should definitely be the pick in this game because it is much stronger up front, and is likely to overpower Cal at the line of scrimmage. Playing at home at night doesn’t hurt the Utes, either.

2 – Oklahoma Sooners vs. Texas Longhorns (Game in Dallas)

This game isn’t one which figures to be close, but remember that two years ago, Oklahoma was a significant favorite against Texas but got upended by the motivated Longhorns, who played far better than anyone expected. That scenario could certainly repeat itself again. Texas isn’t a good team, and it will struggle just to make a bowl game. However, the Longhorns are going to go all-in for this game. They will treat it as their own Big 12 or national championship game. Oklahoma does have to be ready for what Texas will do. The Sooners have to match Texas’ energy in this one. As long as Oklahoma meets the challenge in the first quarter and doesn’t fall well behind early, the Sooners should gradually be able to take over as the game goes along.

3 – Navy Midshipmen @ Notre Dame Fighting Irish

This is a very attractive matchup. Navy has been playing really well this year on both sides of the ball. The offense isn’t turning the ball over much and is finishing drives. The defense isn’t allowing offenses to feel very comfortable, specifically because the Midshipmen aren’t breaking down in the secondary. Notre Dame is a stronger team in the trenches, but with a backup quarterback (DeShone Kizer), the Fighting Irish can’t guarantee that they’ll score a lot of points. They have to protect the ball and make sure they don’t allow Navy to dictate the tempo of the game. Notre Dame should win, but it won’t be a cakewalk.

4 – Northwestern Wildcats @ Michigan Wolverines

The Wildcats are in a very good position in the Big Ten West, and they’ve been one of the real bright spots of the conference in the early part of the season. Their defense has been outstanding, having allowed a total of only 22 points in the last 11 quarters. Michigan’s defense, though has been as good as Northwestern’s. Michigan hasn’t allowed more than seven points in any of its last four games. This is a game in which to bet the under, and Michigan.
