Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Betting Predictions – Potato Bowl Hosts The Final WAC Champion In History

Posted by Blake Frazier on 12/6/2012 5:50:58 PM

The Western Athletic Conference will no longer play football, so the last champion of the league, the Utah State Aggies, will be playing for the history books in the 2012 Potato Bowl.

2012 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl
Toledo Rockets vs. Utah State Aggies – Saturday, December 15
Football betting line: Utah State -10

Why Toledo Will Win

No bet on college football is automatic, but it is clear that Toledo will challenge Utah State's defense for 60 minutes. In typical Mid-American Conference fashion, the Toledo Rockets spent most of 2012 playing high scoring shootouts on their way to a 9-3 season. When dynamic receiver Eric Page left after the 2011 season as one of Toledo’s most decorated players, the Rockets knew they had to find someone to step up and fill his void.

That guy in 2012 has been David Fluellen. While he does his damage on the ground as oppose to through the air like Page, Fluellen has been a dominant back this year, rushing for 1,460 yards and 13 touchdowns entering the bowl season. His rushing total was good for 12th in the nation during the regular season. While the passing game isn’t spectacular, the Rockets did finish 44th in the country throwing the ball to complement their run game. Wide receiver Bernard Reedy went over 1,000 yards on the regular season with six touchdowns, while Alonzo Russell played off Reedy to the tune of 925 yards and five scores.

The Rockets did pick up a win over Cincinnati earlier this season that gave an initial boost to their BCS hopes, but that eventually came to a close only a couple weeks later at the hands of Ball State, which stopped Toledo's push cold. Nevertheless, a nine-win team is nothing to sneeze at. Utah State has to take the Rockets seriously. Toledo owns the firepower needed to win this game.

Why Utah State Will Win

Even mma betting experts could look at a football stat sheet and see that the Aggies are balanced, deep, and very well-rounded. In a matter of weeks Utah State went from potential BCS-spoiler against Louisiana Tech to the WAC’s best team. At 10-2 the Aggies went unbeaten in the WAC and own a last-second loss to Wisconsin on a missed field goal, as well as a field-goal loss to BYU. The Aggies may not be a highlight reel each week, but they’re a sound and well-balanced football team.

Heading into championship week the Aggies ranked in the top 40 nationally of run defense, pass defense, run offense, and pass offense. Running back Kerwynn Williams rushed for slightly under 1,300 yards and totaled 17 touchdowns while quarterback Chuckie Keeton finished the regular season with over 3,000 yards in the air and a 3-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. The Aggies haven’t lost a game in over two months; by the next time they take the field, they will have distanced themselves even more from the sensation of defeat. They have won games against their two biggest WAC challengers, each on the road, and that's something to pay attention to before a neutral-site bowl battle. The Aggies aren’t limited either: Nine players recorded double digit receptions this year and six players had over 20 catches and 200 yards. Defensively they offer a great pass rush that registered 39 sacks and ranked in the top 10 in scoring defense.

Who Will Win

Don't overthink this game. Utah State lost here in the Potato Bowl last year to Ohio. Going back to Boise, Idaho, for another Potato Bowl against the third- or fourth-best team in the Mid-American Conference, Utah State will be very intent on bringing home a bowl victory. Go with the Aggies here.
