Fight Hunger Bowl Betting – Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl Is A Uniquely Awful Matchup

The 2011 Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl is one of those pairings you want to look away from. A 6-7 team faces an opponent that has lost its last six contests. This is not one of the better bowls.

Illinois Fighting Illini vs. UCLA Bruins - Saturday, December 31

Sports betting line: Illinois -3

Why Illinois Will Win

When you do your homework and assess your sports bet on this game, it will quickly become apparent to you that the best reason to pick one team is based solely upon the ability to identify the fullness of its opponent’s weaknesses. In other words, you’re not really betting on Illinois or UCLA to win this game. You’re really betting on the other team to lose. In many ways, then, this subsection – “Why Illinois Will Win” – should genuinely be called, “Why UCLA Will Lose.” Let’s then focus on the matter at hand.

The Bruins continue to linger in the shadow of the USC program in Los Angeles. The memory of the school’s last Pac-10 (now Pac-12) football title in 1998 fades more and more as the years go by. Rick Neuheisel – interestingly enough, the quarterback for the Bruins in the team’s 1984 Rose Bowl win over Illinois – was hired to change the trajectory of the program, but after four regular seasons marked by mediocrity, he was fired. UCLA has not found a replacement for Neuheisel at press time, making this bowl a very uncertain occasion for the Bruins. It’s very easy to see this team not caring at all about a bowl game. The Bruins don’t possess much of any talent on the offensive side of the ball and should be able to be contained by Illinois’ defense on Saturday.

Why UCLA Will Win

The college football betting  experts examining this contest will be up front with you and say that Illinois could lose this game just as much as UCLA could. Amazingly enough, the situation facing Illinois is just as unstable as the one UCLA endured over the past four months. The Illini enjoyed one really good season under Ron Zook in 2007, but the other six seasons didn’t amount to anything, and as a result, Steve Spurrier’s former successor at Florida was fired as the head coach in Champaign. Illinois could be distracted and uninspired in this game just as much as UCLA could be, and with the game being played in San Francisco, UCLA could be the happier team. Illinois could grumble about making a long cross-country plane flight. Yes, that kind of thing can matter in a bowl game.
It’s also worth saying this: The Illini are the first team in the history of the Football Bowl Subdivision to start the season 6-0 and then lose six straight games to finish at 6-6. These teams’ problems aren’t the same, but they’re both stuck in the same pit of misery. Illinois’ brand of misery could very well be worse, leading to a deficient performance and – by extension – a UCLA victory.

Who Will Win

It’s hard to pick a team to win a bowl game when that same team is in the midst of a six-game losing streak, but since Illinois is playing a 6-7 team with hardly any offensive firepower, the Illini are the choice against UCLA this Saturday in San Francisco.
