Florida, Georgia Meet In A Huge SEC East Showdown

Posted by Blake Frazier on 2/4/2014 5:51:12 AM

In the SEC, every game matters for a number of reasons, such as the desire to get the best possible bowl game in the month of January. Florida-Georgia matters because it’s a rivalry.

Georgia Bulldogs vs. Florida Gators (Game in Jacksonville, Fla.) – Saturday, November 2
Sport betting line: Georgia -2.5

Why Georgia Will Win

When the best online betting sites tackle this clash, they will point out that as badly as Georgia has been beaten up this season by injuries, Florida has fared even worse. The Gators have seen eight players get knocked out for the season with injuries before this game against Georgia. Wide receiver Andre Debose, linebacker Matt Rolin, right tackle Chaz Green, cornerback Nick Washington, quarterback Jeff Driskel, defensive tackle Dominique Easley, running back Matt Jones, and linebacker Jeremi Powell comprise the list. There are nine other players who have missed at least one full game due to injury, and there are six players who have missed portions of various games due to injuries. The Gators have simply not had a chance to establish much of any continuity or flow on either side of the ball, especially on offense. Backup quarterback Tyler Murphy is inexperienced, yes, but he hasn’t even received a chance to play with all the first-string players in Florida’s offensive unit. This team has seen its weapons removed from the arsenal, and with the offensive line absorbing a number of blows, Murphy hasn’t had as much of an opportunity to do much of anything in the pocket; he’s always under fire from opposing defensive lines.

Georgia gets a bye week for this game. The Bulldogs have been crushed in their own right by injuries this season, so the chance to heal before playing Florida should be very beneficial.

Why Florida Will Win

This is a game of injuries. Georgia is right there with Florida in terms of being adversely affected by frequent visits to the infirmary in 2013. What’s the survey of the damage sustained by the Bulldogs? For one thing, eight starters have been hit this season: tailbacks Todd Gurley (ankle) and Keith Marshall (knee), wide receivers Michael Bennett (knee), Chris Conley (ankle), Malcolm Mitchell (knee) and Justin Scott-Wesley (knee), and safeties Josh Harvey-Clemons (foot) and Tray Matthews (hamstring). The Bulldogs are likely to regain the services of Gurley and Bennett for Florida. Meanwhile, the availability of Conley, Harvey-Clemons and Matthews is unknown. Any player whose availability is up in the air is obviously hurt enough to the point that one should not expect a quality performance (or perhaps not a long, sustained, high-quality performance). Florida has been badly affected by injuries, but Georgia’s in the same league, and that’s what will keep this game even, enabling the Gators to win in the fourth quarter.

Who Will Win?

The Gators will put up a good fight, but what emerges as a point of differentiation in this game is that the Bulldogs have a superb quarterback in the person of Aaron Murray, while Florida doesn’t (Tyler Murphy). That will separate the two teams and give Georgia the win.
