Sports betting players must feel a little bit of normalcy coming back to college football, as the Florida State Seminoles seem to be on its way back to the top of the ACC. The Virginia Tech Hokies have been there for a few years now as the two meet on Saturday in the ACC championship game, and the Hokies may end up winning, but the Seminoles won’t make it easy.

  • What: NFL betting
  • When: Saturday, December 4th, 7:45 PM ET
  • Where: Bank Of America Stadium, Charlotte, NC
  • Pick: Florida State +4

What’s On The Line

The No.21 Seminoles (9-3, 6-2) ended a six-year losing streak to Florida in a 31-7 romp over the Florida Gators at home, then got some luck to win the ACC Atlantic as Maryland held off a North Carolina State Wolfpack rally to give Florida State the division. The No.15 Hokies (10-2, 8-0) rolled the Virginia Cavaliers 37-7 to win the Coastal, and to also complete the first undefeated ACC schedule since 2000, and they’ll be out for a little revenge: in the first ACC title game in 2005, the Seminoles beat them 27-22.

Offensive Matchups: Florida State Virginia Tech Betting

All the offense had to do against the Gators was hold onto the ball, which they did, and Christian Ponder threw for 221 yards and three scores in his last home game. Tailbacks Jermaine Thomas and Ty Jones were both hurt, so the Florida State ground game wasn’t strong, but again, they didn’t have to be. The Seminoles are 52nd in the nation offensively, and strangely, they’ve been more of a running team, but we all know Ponder is capable of having a big game as well…as long as he doesn’t throw picks.

The Hokies ran for 201 yards against the Cavaliers, which is about par for the course for them, while Tyrod Taylor threw for 176 yards and a touchdown. But this was Taylor’s best year throwing the ball, and he’s always a threat with his legs, making him the No.1 danger man in this game. Darren Evans and David Wilson help out Taylor in the running game, and Jarrett Boykin is a very underrated receiver. Virginia Tech is 39th offensively, but they’re not as balanced as the Seminoles.

Betting Edge: Virginia Tech

Defensive Matchups: Florida State Virginia Tech Betting

Florida State forced four Florida turnovers, and they pushed the Gators into a number of penalties as they wanted to jump early for the Seminoles’ pass rush. Florida State is second in the country in sacks, and that really powers everything they do on this side of the ball. The secondary is prone to giving up big plays, so the longer they’re in coverage, the more likely they will make a mistake. The Virginia Tech offensive line can be breached, and this will be another big matchup to watch.

Virginia Tech stopped the Cavaliers on 11 of 12 third-down opportunities, and they pitched a shutout until there was 2:59 left in the fourth quarter. The Hokies have struggled a bit against the run, coming in 68th in the country, which isn’t a good thing against a Florida State team that likes to run, but the defense is also good at forcing turnovers. They get to the quarterback, coming in 17th in sacks, and they’re 13th in points allowed, two spots below Florida State. They’ve also been on a roll lately, but the Florida State offense may be the best one they’ve faced in a while.

Betting Edge: Florida State

Notable Injuries: Florida State Virginia Tech Betting

Thomas (knee) and Jones (ankle) are battling to get healthy for this game, while Ponder (elbow) has been playing through the pain for the Seminoles.

Cornerback Rashad Carmichael (ankle) missed the rivalry game against Virginia, and he is doing his best to get ready for this game.

Betting Edge: Virginia Tech

Outlook and Pick: Florida State Virginia Tech Betting

NCAA football betting odds have Virginia Tech as a 4-point favorite at the Bank of America Stadium, but Florida State has the edge in this rivalry, going 4-1 SU and ATS in their last five meetings. The Hokies have won two of the last three ACC titles, so they know the pressure of this game, while the Seminoles haven’t been back since winning in 2005, so that’s why they have the edge and will probably win. But we’re betting on Florida State to keep it close, losing by a field goal, and that would be a big statement for a once-great program that is well on its way back. Bet on Florida State to keep Virginia Tech from covering in your online betting book.

Blake’s Pick: Florida State
