The Four Best Bowl Games Of The Week Are All Saturday Showdowns

Posted by Blake Frazier on 12/22/2014 10:16:03 PM

In college football, the presence of bowl season means that any Saturday during the season is going to be stuffed with games. Here are the four best games on a five-way Saturday:

Military Bowl: Cincinnati Bearcats vs. Virginia Tech Hokies (In Annapolis, Maryland)

– Saturday, December 27

This is the one bowl game in which there’s a win differential of three between two teams. Cincinnati has nine wins, Virginia Tech six. Cincinnati shared the American Athletic Conference championship with Memphis and UCF, but Virginia Tech has the higher-quality win between the two teams, a victory over Ohio State in week two of the regular season. Virginia Tech’s offense was terrible in the month of November, so will a break of four weeks give this offense the ability to turn things around? Cincinnati has a weak defense, so Virginia Tech might reasonably think that it can get a lot of things done versus the Bearcats.

Sun Bowl: Arizona State Sun Devils vs. Duke Blue Devils (In El Paso)

– Saturday, December 27

When in El Paso, Duke will try to win a bowl game for the first time in over half a century for the program. The Blue Devils were 8-1 at one point in this season but had to settle for a 9-3 record. When a program such as Duke is disappointed to be 9-3, it’s clear that something has been changed inside the program. The Blue Devils can thank head coach David Cutcliffe, whose teaching and recruiting have turned around Duke as a football program. Against Duke is an Arizona State team that also went 9-3 and faced stiff opposition in the Pac-12. Arizona State quarterback Taylor Kelly has had to deal with injuries and their aftereffects. If he’s sharp in this game, it will be hard for Duke to hang in there.

Pinstripe Bowl: Boston College Eagles vs. Penn State Nittany Lions (In New York)

– Saturday, December 27

This is a game which will make people in the New England and Ohio Valley regions quite excited. There is a sense of similar territory for these teams, and a bowl will come across as special for each team – for Penn State because the Nittany Lions didn’t expect to be made eligible for a bowl game this season, for Boston College because the Eagles were not expected to make a bowl game in this specific season. Penn State was given eligibility for a bowl a few weeks into the season after the NCAA lightened a bowl prohibition. Boston College lost 2013 Heisman Trophy runner-up Andre Williams and was not supposed to be able to do anything on offense. Yet, these teams are both in a bowl game. Their fans will relish the meeting in Yankee Stadium.

Holiday Bowl: Nebraska Cornhuskers vs. USC Trojans (In San Diego)

– Saturday, December 27

It’s Nebraska. It’s USC. It’s San Diego, a great destination for two bowl teams. USC is playing in its first Holiday Bowl. Nebraska just hired USC’s strength coach and brought him aboard the staff. Mike Riley, Nebraska’s new coach, used to coach in the Pac-12 at Oregon State and was once sought by USC to be the Trojans’ head coach. This will be a very emotional and spirited game next Saturday night.
