Heisman Betting Tips – Heisman Trophy Power Rankings

Posted by Blake Frazier on 10/1/2012 6:49:46 PM

The race for the Heisman Trophy is still in its early stages, but now that the month of September is over, it's a little easier to size up this competition, mostly because several players have already eliminated themselves from competition.

When people in the online sports betting legal  realm get down to brass tacks and look at the college football landscape, they'll notice a few surprises in the Heisman sweepstakes. For one thing, the preseason favorite for the award won't be in the mix. Matt Barkley, the quarterback for the USC Trojans, has already lost one of the high-stakes poker games that he didn't figure to drop in 2012. Stanford has proven that its offense is not very special, and the Cardinal scored only 21 points against USC on Sept. 15, but Barkley's offense managed just 14 points. Barkley threw two interceptions in that game and didn't even complete 50 percent of his passes. That's a knockout blow in the Heisman race, even though USC can still compete for the Pac-12 Conference championship.

The football betting gurus who focus on the college game and minimize their exposure to the NFL will also contend that Oklahoma quarterback Landry Jones has eliminated himself from the Heisman chase after a brutally bad performance against Kansas State on Sept. 22. The fact that Oklahoma lost was not the only problem with Jones' body of work against Kansas State; it was the fact that he committed two turnovers that the Wildcats turned into 14 points, good enough for a five-point win.

Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson, after two awful performances against Alabama and Notre Dame, is clearly finished as a Heisman contender. One of last year's finalists, Wisconsin running back Montee Ball, will not get a plane ticket to New York this year after a pair of losses in the month of September.  Michigan State running back Le'Veon Bell turned in the best and most impressive outing of any college football player in week one of the season when he rushed for over 200 yards on 44 carries against Boise State, but Ohio State prevented him from getting even one first down this past Saturday, so Bell's Heisman candidacy is just about done. His Spartans also lost to Notre Dame.
If one is to focus on the players that are still alive in the Heisman race, the top five would likely consist of these five players: Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein; Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o; Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron; West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith; and Florida State quarterback E.J. Manuel. These players either have their teams in the national-title hunt or have put up remarkable statistics (or both). If one were to rank these players in order of their likely finish this December at New York's Downtown Athletic Club (realizing that the voting is far away and will naturally change in the coming weeks), the list would probably look like this:

1 – McCarron. Teams that make the national championship game usually produce Heisman winners, and McCarron is the player most likely to reach the national title tilt.

2 – Smith. His performance against Baylor last Saturday attracted national attention. If he wins at Texas with a five-star effort, he will probably take over the top spot.

3 – Manuel. Florida State is the best bet to face Alabama in the national championship game.

4 – Te'o. Notre Dame will keep him in the media spotlight, and he's been a terrific player for an elite defense.

5 – Klein. He is overlooked and undervalued, but he should still be a Heisman finalist if he continues to produce.
