Holiday Bowl Betting – Holiday Bowl Probably Won’t Light Up The Scoreboard

The 2011 Holiday Bowl will mark something of a departure from most Holiday Bowls. A game that has historically been high scoring will probably feature defense this time around.

Texas Longhorns vs. California Golden Bears - Wednesday, December 28

Sports betting line: Texas -3

Why Texas Will Win

When you do your homework and assess your sports bet on this game, it will become likely that when kickoff time arrives, the California Golden Bears won’t be able to do very much when they have the football. California fattened up on weak teams in 2011, scoring 63 points against Presbyterian College and 47 points against an Arizona State team that had packed in its season for a coach – Dennis Erickson – who knew he was going to be fired. Against the strongest teams in the Pac-12 Conference – Oregon, USC and Stanford – Cal averaged 17.3 points per game, and that average was puffed up by late scores against Stanford when victory was out of reach. Cal quarterback Zach Maynard is a transfer from Buffalo, and the young man has played like a refugee from the Mid-American Conference. Maynard’s arm simply cannot threaten upper-tier defenses, so Texas defensive coordinator Manny Diaz must be licking his chops. Texas had the eighth-ranked pass defense in the country before Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin smoked the Longhorns in the final game of the regular season. Safe to say, Maynard isn’t anywhere near Griffin in terms of ability. Texas will welcome an opponent it can fairly easily contain. The Longhorns should clamp down on defense and gain the upper hand in San Diego.

Why California Will Win

The college football betting  experts who are looking at this contest have to be wondering when the turnaround at Texas will take place. The Longhorns didn’t make a bowl game last season and accordingly tried to hire their way into prosperity. Texas brought about Bryan Harsin – Chris Petersen’s former right-hand man at Boise State – to call the shots on the offensive side of the ball while bringing in a new defensive coordinator as well. Yet, for all of the changes orchestrated by head coach Mack Brown, Texas didn’t improve all that much from one season to the next. The Horns could only register a 7-5 record, putting a lot of heat on this team for the 2012 season. Texas quarterbacks David Ash and Case McCoy simply could not move the offense with any consistency. California is challenged in its own right on the offensive side of the ball, but when the Bears go up against the Longhorns, they’ll face an offense that won’t be able to seriously threaten them. Texas will not be able to pull away from Cal, and this is what will enabled the Golden Bears to have a great chance at stealing this win in the fourth quarter.

Who Will Win

It’s going to be a battle of defenses at Qualcomm Stadium, the home of the San Diego Chargers. The sense here is that while Texas’ quarterbacks won’t play well, Maynard will play terribly. A plus-three margin in the turnover battle will give the Longhorns a victory over the Golden Bears.
