How To Bet On Alabama Tennessee – Volunteers In Tough With Tide Set To Roll Through Knoxville

Posted by Blake Frazier on 10/17/2012 6:47:06 PM

The Tennessee Volunteers have followed up a 3-0 start with three-straight losses to open the SEC portion of their schedule. A visit from the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide this Saturday isn’t going to make things any easier on them. Despite junior quarterback Tyler Bray leading an offense that ranks in the top-25 nationally in both yards and points per game, the Volunteers have lost each of their three games against ranked SEC opponents. Alabama enters this game looking to extend its undefeated record to seven wins, and slowing down Bray and company will be just the beginning for a defense that has allowed just 7.5 points per game so far this online betting season.

Tennessee has scored an average of 31.5 points per game in three losses to SEC opponents, but has been let down by one of the worst defenses in the program’s history. Ironically, that defense is led by first-year coordinator Sal Sunseri, a former linebacker coach at Alabama.

The Crimson Tide defense certainly hasn’t missed Sunseri, or the seven starters it lost to this past year’s NFL Draft. Alabama has actually improved its average points per game and yards allowed, as well as its rushing yards allowed, which is down more than 20 yards per game. This will be the Tide’s toughest test so far against the pass, and the key will be to generate pressure up front in an effort to force Bray in to making mistakes. That is something that junior quarterback AJ McCarron hasn’t done much of so far this season, as he has thrown 12 touchdowns without an interception. Alabama’s 25th-ranked rushing attack has certainly taken some of the pressure off McCarron in the pocket, but that won’t take away from the improvements he has made.

College Football Betting Preview: Tennessee

The Volunteers certainly have the weapons on offense to compete with the best in the SEC, but it’s on the defensive side of the ball that the team has suffered its biggest letdown. Bray has thrown for 1,730 yards and an SEC-best 16 touchdowns but Tennessee is giving up an average of 31.5 points per game, the most in more than a century. The Vols are also giving up an average of 429.9 yards per contest, which is the worst since the school began recording those online sportsbook statistics in 1950.

College Football Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

Tennessee’s offense has been excellent this season, but the Volunteers’ defense has actually been bad enough that it has overshadowed the offensive production to the point where they are 0-3 in SEC play. Those three losses have pushed Tennessee to 14-straight losses against ranked opponents, and it’s scary to think that this will be its toughest test so far. Alabama has actually improved on paper from what last year’s national championship team was able to do, and with three-straight against ranked opponents right around the corner, the Tide will want to emerge from this game hitting on all cylinders.
