How To Bet On Cincinnati Bearcats – Graduation Hurts Bearcats' 2012 Chances

Posted by Blake Frazier on 8/15/2012 6:27:25 PM

NCAA football betting experts watched last season as the Cincinnati Bearcats ran up a 5-2 Big East record and a 10-3 overall record. That was a good showing for a school that has had problems competing in the past. But as the 2012 season approaches, the Cincinnati Bearcats are going to be facing a series of difficult challenges that may wind up being too much for the team to overcome. The team may struggle to finish .500 this season and may not show as well in the Big East as it did last year.

Head Coach: Butch Jones
Offensive Coordinator: Mike Bajakian
Defensive Coordinator: John Jancek
Stadium: Nippert Stadium, Cincinnati, OH
Capacity:  35,097
National Championships: 0

Offense is the problem for the Bearcats as the team has only four players returning from last season. Graduation and the NFL draft have completely gutted the Cincinnati offense and Butch Jones will have to start all over again. The biggest question the sports betting experts have is who will replace former quarterback Zach Collaros. Running back George Winn returns for another season, but three of his starting offensive linemen from 2011 are not returning. There are a lot of questions on offense for Cincinnati and too few answers as the team enters the season. With uncertainty at quarterback and an offensive line that has not played together before, this could be a long season for the Bearcats offense.

Grade: D+

The Cincinnati secondary has most of its players returning from last year and that will help give some stability to the defense. The Bearcats proved to be a tough team to throw against and that is one of the things that helped to lead the team to a 5-2 record. Last season, the Bearcats played good Big East defense. This season, there are enough parts there with experience to feel comfortable about Cincinnati's chances for playing well on defense.

The one problem the Bearcats may have is the loss of linebacker JK Schaffer and the loss of defensive lineman Derek Wolfe. Both players were instrumental in holding down the Cincinnati pass rush and run defense. Without the two of those players in their spots, the replacements will have to step up or Cincinnati will have to compensate by utilizing cornerbacks and safeties to rush the passer and stop the run.

Grade: C+

Special Teams

Ralph David Abernathy IV was one of the primary impact players on special teams for the Bearcats last season as he averaged a little over 26 yards per kick return. But with George Winn being the only returning starting running back, Abernathy may see more time running the ball on offense then returning the ball on special teams.

Cincinnati will have an army of young players to go through to determine who can return kicks and who will cover on special teams. The team will have to try out several combinations before it finds one that works, and that will take time. Look for Cincinnati to be weak on special teams in the early part of the season, but improve as time goes by.

Grade: C

The betting sites can see the problems for the Cincinnati Bearcats piling up. While the team should be able to hold its own on defense, there will be a lot of adjusting on offense and special teams to deal with. The team lost seven offensive starters to graduation and that is never easy to recover from. The biggest problem Cincinnati will have will be trying to shore up its offensive line in time to win some games.

A team needs offense to compete in the Big East and the Bearcats have very little. By the time Cincinnati figures out what it is doing on offense, the season will be half over. Look for Cincinnati to fade from Big East contention early and then be unable to catch up.
