How To Bet On Nebraska Cornhuskers – Inability to Throw Will Sink The ‘Huskers

Posted by Blake Frazier on 8/14/2012 6:14:39 PM

Online betting players that are looking to back Nebraska will find that the Cornhuskers have the same problem that they’ve had the past two years:  they can’t throw the ball. You can only get away with that for so long in the world of college football and the Cornhuskers won’t move up to the elite level until they have a quarterback that can keep defenses honest.

Head Coach: Bo Pelini (5th year)
Offensive Coordinator: Tim Beck
Defensive Coordinator: John Papuhis
Stadium: Memorial Stadium, Lincoln, NE
Capacity:  81,067
National Championships: 5

Offense

The Cornhuskers are predominately a running team and they ranked 15th in the country in that category, led by running back Rex Burkhead and quarterback Taylor Martinez, who is much better with his feet than with his arm. Both are back, but the offensive line is missing two starters and there is differing levels of experience among the three that are back. The receiving corps have some experience, but Nebraska isn’t going to be airing it out and making people think that they’re a team like Houston that likes to throw at every opportunity.

That is because Martinez still isn’t that accurate as a junior and you have to think that he’ll never be able to consistently hit the open man. If it wasn’t for his scrambling abilities, Martinez wouldn’t see the field, but he can break plays and open up the field for Burkhead, who may be a college football betting darkhorse for the Heisman award.

Grade: C+

Defense

Bo Pelini is known as one of the best defensive minds in the country, but his team was 37th in total defense and 42nd in points allowed and that won’t cut it in the Big Ten, where the top three or four teams are very close. They were much better against the pass despite ranking 84th in sacks and they have three starters back in the secondary, which will come in handy. There are eight starters back in total for the Cornhuskers, but there are a couple issues worth looking at.

Alfonzo Dennard and Lavonte David were the stars of the defensive unit in Lincoln, but what happens now that they’re gone? The Cornhuskers will have to figure out a way to replace their best playmakers and no one has stepped up so far in the spring. If no one does throughout the season, it’ll be a long year at Nebraska for Pelini and company.

Grade: B-

Special Teams

This could be the best unit in Nebraska this season Brett Maher handles both kicking and punting duties and he could be an All-American at either, which is something that college football betting players shouldn’t underestimate.

Ameer Abdullah returns punts and kicks for Nebraska and the kick-return team had much more success, ranking seventh in the country. If the Cornhuskers can return kickoffs as well as they do punts, the battle for field position is that much easier for Nebraska, who doesn’t have an offense that can put up points in a hurry.

Grade: B

Prediction

Nebraska comes in at +300 in the Big Ten and +3500 for the national title, and the conference should be the goal for the Cornhuskers, who have to deal with Michigan, Wisconsin and Michigan State for the top spot in the Big Ten. 2011 was Nebraska’s first season in the Big Ten after moving from the Big 12 and overall, finishing 9-4 wasn’t bad.

The Cornhuskers have another nine-win season in their sights, but Martinez has to show that he can throw the ball or else defenses are going to load up against the run, if they haven’t been already. Martinez hasn’t shown much improvement in two years in Lincoln, and some seem him as a colossal disappointment. This is going to be a massive season for the Cornhuskers, who should be able to find nine more wins, but they won’t be a factor in the Big Ten’s sports betting odds.
