How To Bet On Tigers Athletics – Tigers Try To Find One More Win In Oakland In ALDS

Posted by Dale "Skip" Lalonde on 10/9/2012 7:25:11 PM

The Detroit Tigers do lead the American League Division Series by two games over the Oakland Athletics, but they have to win at least one road game in order to put the series away.

Detroit Tigers @ Oakland Athletics – Game Previews For Games 3, 4 and 5

Game 3: Tuesday, October 9

Sports betting experts will lean to Oakland in Game 3. The Tigers have been beset by inconsistency in their starting rotation behind staff ace and Game 1 winner Justin Verlander. Anibal Sanchez will go for Detroit in Game 3 against Brett Anderson, who will start for the Athletics after recovering from an injury to his oblique muscle. Sanchez has a 3.86 earned-run average and has pitched better in the month of September, but the Tigers can't know what to expect from a young and generally unproven performer in the postseason spotlight.

It's true that Anderson, with a 2.57 ERA, is also something of a question mark since he is battling back from an injury, but pitching on one's home field should make this experience so much more comfortable for Anderson than for Sanchez. All of the starting pitchers in the first two games of the series – Verlander and Doug Fister for Detroit, Jarrod Parker and Tommy Milone for Oakland – have done well. It could be the case that Game 3 will be a slugfest, given Sanchez's relative inexperience and Anderson's physical condition.

Game 4 (If necessary): Wednesday, October 10

The betting websites that pay particularly close attention to baseball (while other sites gravitate to football) will point out that what's true for Game 3 could also be true in Game 4: A slugfest could emerge.

Detroit starter Max Scherzer, who would pitch on Wednesday if this series does indeed go to a Game 4, struggled throughout the first half of the season, failing to properly locate his pitches. However, after the All-Star Game, he became Detroit's best pitcher in July and especially August. Scherzer overtook Verlander for the most strikeouts of any pitcher on the Tigers' staff. He threw big-league heat and generated great, late movement on his pitches within the strike zone. He was able to overpower hitters and shut down threats as a result of his ability to get strikeouts in key situations.

Scherzer, however, suffered shoulder fatigue in late September, and on Oct. 1, he mildly injured his ankle while celebrating the Tigers' Central Division championship in Kansas City. Scherzer has lost velocity on his pitches, and with the spotty ankle, he's likely to be a sitting duck for Oakland's home-run-hitting batting order in Game 4. His ERA is 3.74, but Scherzer is likely to post an ERA much worse than that if a Game 4 does unfold.

If Detroit is to win a Game 4, it will have to bash Oakland starter A.J. Griffin. It's true that Griffin's earned-run average for the regular season was a very impressive 3.06, but Griffin lost a little steam in September, failing to eat as many innings while losing some bite on his pitches. The big hope for Detroit is that Oakland's rookie pitching staff will get tired and lose some juice in at least one of these next two games. Detroit would love to win this series in no more than four games. If it can, it would be able to save Verlander for Game 1 of the American League Championship Series.

Game 5 (If necessary): Thursday, October 11

When betting on online poker, you are playing a game that involves a certain trust in the cards that come up. If a Game 5 is needed, Verlander would go to the mound for the Tigers. He would be pitted against Jarrod Parker of the A's in a rematch of Game 1 of this series from this past weekend. In one game, anything can happen. Verlander might be the better pitcher, but Oakland would have all the momentum plus a raucous home crowd in its corner. All in all, this series might be 2-0 in favor of Detroit, but it still feels like a 50-50 series at this point.
