How To Bet On USC Stanford – Barkley, USC Look To Finally Take Down Stanford

Posted by Blake Frazier on 9/13/2012 6:41:54 PM

Andrew Luck and the Stanford Cardinal threw everything they had at the USC Trojans in his final game against them a year ago, and they only barely scraped by them with a triple overtime win. Now there is another Heisman trophy candidate under center in this game, only this time he will be helping the second-ranked Trojans try to avenge that loss from a year ago to open this season with a third-straight win. USC quarterback Matt Barkley has never beaten Stanford through three years in the PAC-12, but will have a great chance to finally get the job done this week when the Trojans take on the Cardinal.

College Football Betting Line: USC Trojans – 9.5

After a soft win over San Jose State, Stanford bounced back last week by pounding Duke but that really isn’t enough to convince anyone this is even near the online sportsbook team they were a year ago with Luck under center. USC has spent the last two years in the shadows of their PAC-12 rivals, and now finally have the chance to emerge as the team to beat in the conference.

Nobody will want this game more than Barkley, who has lost all three of his games against the Cardinal but gets one last chance to get the job done. The senior quarterback has already thrown 10 touchdown passes through two games and matched a career-high with six last week at Syracuse, even though he only threw for 187 yards. The Trojans are still trying to figure out their rushing attack with Penn State transfer Silas Redd leading the way, but they did show improvement as last week’s game wore on. USC’s defense held its own against Syracuse through the first two quarters but let up a bit as the offense got going, but don’t expect that to happen this week.

College Football Betting Preview: Stanford

The Cardinal will get everything that USC has thrown at them and more this week, as Trojans’ head coach Lane Kiffin looks to dismantle Stanford in a game where his team can make a real statement. Containing the wide receiver tandem of Marqise Lee and Robert Woods will be the top priority, and the Cardinal defense will struggle to stop the big play even if they didn’t look too bad their first two games. Running back Stepfan Taylor remains a workhorse in the Stanford backfield, but junior Josh Nunes is going to have to find a way to open things up and spread the ball around if the Cardinal are going to have any chance of keeping up.

College Football Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

The subtraction of Luck from the Stanford team is a clearly a huge sports betting loss, and the fact that this team needed triple-overtime to beat a much lesser USC team a year ago even with him is an indication that this team may struggle to keep up. Nunes is young and inexperienced and will need time to develop his game, and even with a healthy Taylor in the backfield the Cardinal will have trouble keeping up. Barkley has waited four years for the chance to finally knock off his biggest PAC-12 rival, and he won’t waste his final opportunity to get it done.
