The 2011 Insight Bowl is a battle between a middling team from a weak Big Ten Conference and an underachieving but very talented team from a strong Big 12 Conference. It could get ugly.

Iowa Hawkeyes vs. Oklahoma Sooners - Friday, December 30

Sports betting line: Oklahoma -13.5

Why Iowa Will Win

When you do your homework and assess your sports bet on this game, it’s impossible to deny the extent to which Oklahoma has fallen this year. Sooner coach Bob Stoops has watched his secondary get eviscerated on a regular basis in ugly losses to Baylor, Texas Tech, and Oklahoma State. OU failed to defend its Big 12 championship and fell all the way out of the BCS bowl picture, failing to get an at-large berth. The loss to Texas Tech came at home; a conference loss at Owen Field in Norman represents an unheard-of development for a program that expected to contend for the national title this season. Oklahoma has been ravaged by injuries to prime performers such as receiver Ryan Broyles and running back Dominique Whaley, so with Broyles and Whaley unavailable for this game, the Sooners will find it a challenge to play well, something they didn’t do throughout the month of November. OU’s mental state might not be where it needs to be; the Sooners could sulk their way through a game they do not want to play; they’d much rather be in the Fiesta Bowl right now.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

The college football betting  experts who are looking at this contest are convinced that Iowa is not ready to play well. Moreover, they now know the Hawkeyes will be missing a very important cog in their offense.
Coach Kirk Ferentz has certainly done a lot of good for the Iowa program. His unbeaten regular season in 2002 lifted the Hawkeyes to the Orange Bowl against USC. Ferentz also won the 2005 Capital One Bowl with Iowa and led the team to the 2010 Orange Bowl championship thanks to a commanding win over Georgia Tech. Ferentz has collected a number of achievements during his stay in Iowa City, and that’s why his name has often been linked to NFL coaching jobs. However, for all of Ferentz’s genuine accomplishments, he’s also failed to make Iowa an annual threat. The Hawkeyes snuck up on the rest of the Big Ten in their 2002 and 2009 breakthrough seasons, but when loaded with a lot of returning talent the following years, they stumbled. Iowa’s 2010 team was viewed as a national title contender, but it plummeted to a 7-5 record, losing to a lowly Minnesota team late in the season. The offense never gelled, and week-to-week consistency proved to be thoroughly elusive. Upper-tier teams in the league were able to come into Kinnick Stadium and win – Wisconsin and Ohio State in particular.

This year, things have been little different for the Hawkeyes, although they weren’t expected to go far in the Big Ten. No, the national title hopes of 2010 didn’t carry into 2011, but the end result of Iowa’s regular season was the same. Ferentz carded a 7-5 record with a late-season loss to Minnesota and a home-field loss to Legends Division champion Michigan State. Iowa is rarely the same team on a weekly basis; had the Hawks not erased a three-touchdown deficit against Pittsburgh in September, they’d be sitting at .500 right now.

As Iowa prepares for this game, it knows that it will not be able to put running back Marcus Coker in uniform. The star of Iowa’s 2010 Insight Bowl win over Missouri will be out of action for this game, severely limiting the Hawkeyes’ options on offense. Oklahoma should cruise not because it is so special, but because Iowa is a gutted team at the moment.

Who Will Win

It’s not going to be a joyful night for Oklahoma – the Sooners expect to play in bigger, better bowls – but with that having been said, the Sooners are facing an Iowa team which, without Marcus Coker, simply can’t threaten OU’s defense. Iowa has nothing to offer. Oklahoma will struggle early but then roll in the second half and cover the number.
