Kansas State Wildcats Betting Tips – A Team That Maximizes Resources Must Do So Again

Offense

For anyone interested in the Big 12 world of college football betting, the Kansas State Wildcats are going to provide a challenge. This is a tricky team to size up because its offense maxed out so much last season… not necessarily in terms of raw dominance or output, but in its ability to take advantage of just about every opportunity. Kansas State spent most of the season winning games against the run of play. A typical KSU victory last season came at Texas Tech. The Wildcats scored a 41-34 decision over the Red Raiders despite being outgained, 580 yards to 339. Kansas State protected the ball and made fewer mistakes in important moments, and that's the modus operandi that enabled the Cats to thrive.

Quarterback Collin Klein produced one of the best seasons of any player in the country, using his legs more than his feet in the process. Klein threw for over 1,900 yards and posted 13 touchdown passes, but he ran for over 1,100 yards and scored 27 touchdowns on the ground. Klein's dual-threat virtuosity baffled Big 12 defenses, giving the Wildcats the balance and diversity they needed to outpace opponents for most of the season.

This season, Klein is back under center, giving KSU its best weapon. Kansas State can't be able to rely on winning games in which it gets outgained by 240 yards. Klein is better as a runner than as a passer, which means that for the Wildcats to become more formidable, their quarterback has to become more consistent in the pocket. Defenses will look to take away Klein's improvisational playmaking ability, so Klein will have to shore up his weaker points in order to make this offense complete.

Grade: A-

Defense

The ranks of betting websites are going to be skeptical of the Wildcats because of their vulnerability on the defensive side of the ball. Kansas State's defense got obliterated by Oklahoma and Oklahoma State while getting knocked on its heels by Texas A&M and Texas Tech. The Wildcats were so regularly saved by their offense, but one thing to keep in mind is that they won games against the run of play because they were eventually able to get turnovers. This season, KSU must become a more resilient defense. It will have to produce more stops and not rely on takeaways. The Wildcats are living on a slippery slope. More three-and-outs will be necessary for K-State to improve in 2012.

Grade: C

Special Teams

Various legal online sports betting analysts are not going to put too much weight on Kansas State's special teams performance. First, the Wildcats aren't going to win a lot with field goals. Second, the Big 12 is a conference with high-octane offenses; punting will have only so much of an impact when quarterbacks can throw a 40-yard pass to immediately flip the field. Kansas State did not hurt itself last year in the kicking game, but it did not transform its season, either.

Grade: B

Prediction

The Wildcats will have to be just as good as they were in 2011 to merely compete in the Big 12. Last season, Kansas State finished second in the Big 12, sneaking up on their opponents and taking the college football world by storm; this season, the Wildcats will get everyone's best shot in a souped-up conference that includes TCU and West Virginia. Even if Kansas State does a lot of things right, it will probably finish third or fourth in the Big 12. That's the reality of what this team faces at the moment.
