LSU Travels To Starkville For Tough Week 2 Test Versus SEC Rivals Mississippi State

Posted by on 9/11/2015 10:05:58 PM

The LSU Tigers have absolutely dominated their SEC rivalry with the Mississippi State Bulldogs over the past decade. Now they hope they can continue their dominance on the road at Starkville in Week 2. Expectations are high heading in to a new season but we won’t actually get to see LSU play until this week after their opener against McNeese State was postponed due to lightning. The Tigers had won 14 straight meetings with Mississippi State before last year’s loss in Baton Rouge and while they probably would have liked to play a full game in order to get rid of some rust they can’t afford a slow start this week with the Bulldogs looking to make a statement at home.

#14 LSU Tigers @ #25 Mississippi State Bulldogs

Saturday September 12, 2015 – 9:15 PM ET

Line: LSU -3

LSU returns 15 starters from last season’s team that won eight games and expectations will certainly be higher this time around. Heisman trophy candidate running back Leonard Fournette is perhaps the most important returner along with three of the dive starters on the offensive line and there is no doubt the Tigers will want their star rusher to carry a heavy workload early on in this one while sophomore quarterback Brandon Harris becomes more comfortable. The coaches would have definitely liked a full week of work in order to evaluate the tape and work out any issues that might have come up in practice but that is a luxury they won’t have. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs definitely had that opportunity following a 34-16 win over Southern Mississippi in which they weren’t nearly as dominant as they could have been. Dak Prescott threw for 237 yards and two touchdowns along with 72 rushing yards and another score but he completed only 22-of-38 passes and he knows he can be better. It will take some time for the Mississippi State offense to play to its peak potential but Prescott looked good enough last week to think that this game deserves a potential upset alert. The Bulldogs ended their 14-game losing skid against LSU with a 34-29 win at Death Valley that wasn’t nearly as close as the score indicated and they have to feel confident about their chances to win this game as they look to continue their rise in the AP Top-25 and SEC West division. Mississippi State is 5-2 against the spread over its last seven games and we expect that trend to continue with a big win at home in primetime.

Pick: Mississippi State +3

Total: 50

These teams return several players that helped put up a combined 63 points when they clashed at Baton Rouge last season and there is every reason to expect another high scoring game. The Bulldogs can score points in bunches and they should sprinkle some new wrinkles in this weekend to catch LSU off guard. Meanwhile, the Tigers might start slow but they have enough offensive weapons led by Fournette to at least make this game interesting and it won’t be a surprise when this game goes over the 50-point total.

Pick: OVER
