Meineke Car Care Bowl Of Texas Betting Tips – Texas Tech Clashes With Minnesota In Meineke Car Care Bowl As Post-Tuberville Era Begins

Posted by Blake Frazier on 12/13/2012 6:11:16 PM

With a fourth-consecutive bowl game lined up and the chance to finish the season on top in their home state, few thought that the Texas Tech Red Raiders would be looking for a new head coach come December. However, Tommy Tuberville bolted for Cincinnati, and left the Red Raiders without a head coach for their upcoming date with the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas. Texas Tech named offensive line coach Chris Thomson the interim bench boss for the game as the program continues it search for a permanent fix, and it will be on Thomson to get the team ready for a tough test from Minnesota.

The last time these teams met in the postseason was the 2006 Insight Bowl, when the Red Raiders stormed back from a 38-7 third-quarter deficit to cap off the biggest postseason comeback in Division-I history with a 44-41 overtime win. The names and faces are different now, but sports betting fans are hoping for an equally thrilling show.

College Football Betting Preview: Minnesota

Minnesota still isn’t sold on its own head coach with Jerry Kill manning the sidelines, but capturing its first postseason win since after the 2004 season would certainly be an indication he is the right man for the job. The Golden Gophers will make their first bowl appearance since 2009, and despite a relatively mediocre record they did make steps following a 3-9 record in Kill’s first season. Minnesota’s defense finished in the top-40 in the nation, but far too many nights the offense struggled with consistency. The Golden Gophers scored 14 points or less in each of their six losses, each of which came against Big Ten opponents.

The Red Raiders were in excellent position to challenge for a Big 12 title following back-to-back wins over West Virginia and TCU, but the team went on to lose four of its next five to stumble in to the postseason. Rebounding without their head coach and leader won’t be easy, but an explosive offense should be able to help spark the team. Senior quarterback Seth Doege threw for 3,934 yards and 38 touchdowns to lead the second-ranked passing game in the nation, while the running back tandem of Kenny Williams and Sadale Foster each averaged over five yards per carry. The Texas Tech offense is capable of putting up points in bunches, and if they get back to the way they were playing earlier in the season this one will not be close.

College Football Betting Preview: Outlook & Pick

The disparity between these teams is marked by the online sportsbook spread, but it may still not be enough to keep Texas Tech from covering. The Red Raiders struggled against much tougher competition at the end of the year, but their offense is dangerous and Minnesota doesn’t have the weapons to take advantage of a defense that allowed an average of 55.5 points over its final two losses. Texas Tech will score early and often, just don’t expect them to spot Minnesota the type of lead they did in the 2006 Insight Bowl before they do.
