The Ohio State Buckeyes and Miami Hurricanes thrilled the college football world when they met in the 2003 Fiesta Bowl to decide that season’s national championship. Miami brought a 34-game winning streak into Tempe, Arizona, and was set to win its second straight national crown. Moreover, Miami led in the first overtime by a 24-17 score and had knocked down an Ohio State pass on fourth down. However, a late flag thrown by the back judge appeared, and a pass interference call gave Ohio State new life after Miami players had already stormed the field in celebration. The Buckeyes tied the score with a touchdown and then won 31-24 in double overtime to complete a 14-0 season and win OSU’s first championship since 1968. Now, the two teams re-unite in Columbus in what is the biggest game of week two’s college football slate.

Why To Bet On Miami

The Hurricanes beat Oklahoma and Georgia Tech in the first month of the 2009 season, and they began to create the idea that they could regain the prominence the Miami program once had. Now armed with one more year of experience and battle-tested wisdom, the Hurricanes and head coach Randy Shannon might have the resilience needed to go into a hostile environment and win. Jacory Harris lit up Florida A&M in Miami’s season opener, and even though Florida A&M is an FCS opponent with no outstanding virtues or credentials, Harris got the confidence boost he needed after flaming out at the end of the 2009 season and throwing a boatload of interceptions by lofting them into multiple coverage. If Harris plays to the fullest extent of his capabilities, Ohio State’s defense – whose secondary was not terrifically sharp in its opener against Marshall – can be victimized this Saturday. Miami’s offense needs to max out in order for the Canes to have a good shot in this one. Harris could be ready to deliver a five-star effort and get the job done.

Why To Bet On Ohio State

The Buckeyes’ offense is not your father’s Woody Hayes-style offense. Terrelle Pryor was very sharp in OSU’s season opener against Marshall last Thursday, completing 68 percent of his passes and throwing three touchdowns without an interception. While Jacory Harris regressed for Miami over the course of 2009, Pryor improved by leaps and bounds after hitting rock bottom in the middle of the season. Following horrible games against Wisconsin and Purdue, Pryor slowly improved in November and then attained an elevated level in the 2010 Rose Bowl against Oregon. Making sound reads and wise decisions with the ball, Pryor presided over an effective short-range passing game that moved the sticks on third down and kept Oregon’s defense off balance. That version of Pryor showed up against Marshall, and if it emerges again versus Miami, it will be very hard to see how the Hurricanes can avenge the 2003 Fiesta Bowl result.

How The Game Will Play Out

Pryor will play very well, and Harris will struggle. Miami is not all the way back as a program, and with this game being played at Ohio State, it’s a big ask to expect the Hurricanes to prevail on the road. Take the Buckeyes, who will deliver a solid victory.
