The Nebraska Cornhuskers lost one big home game on Oct. 16 against the Texas Longhorns. They’ll try to get things right in an even bigger home game this weekend against Missouri.

Why To Bet On Missouri?

The Missouri Tigers have to be overflowing with confidence and self belief after thumping the Oklahoma Sooners this past weekend, 36-27. Missouri looked a little overmatched for much of the first half, but when Oklahoma turned the ball over in the Tigers’ red zone, Missouri responded the way coach Gary Pinkel hoped his team would. The Tigers took the fight to Oklahoma in the second half, gashing the Sooners’ increasingly tired defense with the running game and executing with undeniably greater precision. Quarterback Blaine Gabbert was the picture of composure against Oklahoma, while his counterpart, Sooner signal caller Landry Jones, cracked under pressure. Missouri has not enjoyed much success over the years against either Oklahoma or Nebraska, dating back to the three programs’ annual battles in the old Big 8 Conference, which preceded the Big 12 (created in 1996). If ever there was a time when Missouri had the right mindset and the skill set needed to take down Nebraska on the road in Lincoln, this year would seem to fit the bill.

Why To Bet On Nebraska

The Huskers, who had to be very demoralized by their disappointing loss to Texas on Oct. 16, answered the bell with distinction this past Saturday in Stillwater, Oklahoma State. Instead of sulking or pouting about their major letdown against Texas, the Huskers picked themselves off the deck and ripped through Oklahoma State’s defense in a 51-41 win. The most encouraging part of the afternoon for Nebraska and head coach Bo Pelini was that quarterback Taylor Martinez – who was plainly atrocious against Texas and got benched in the second half of that game – shrugged off the horrible performance to light up Oklahoma State’s secondary. Known primarily as a runner, Martinez flashed first-rate passing skills to carve up the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Martinez went 23-of-35 (roughly two-thirds of his passes) for 323 yards, five touchdowns, and – most importantly – no interceptions. It’s really rather simple: If this is the Taylor Martinez who shows up against Missouri on Saturday, the Huskers’ offense should thrive. And if the Huskers’ offense does thrive on home soil at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, Missouri will have to deal with an energized Nebraska crowd. This is the Big 12 North game of the year; because Missouri is unbeaten while Nebraska has one conference loss, the Tigers would virtually sew up the North title if they can win this game. Nebraska would only tie Missouri in the standings with a win, but the Cornhuskers would obviously own the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Tigers. This is a massive moment for Nebraska, and the fact that this game is at home is a huge advantage.

How The Game Will Play Out

Nebraska slipped and stumbled in one huge home game this year, and that’s probably the only time the Big Red will falter on their home field. The Huskers are still the class of the Big 12 North, and they’ll play like it against a Missouri team that will find it hard to sustain the same level of emotion it displayed in a home win over Oklahoma. The Tigers need this game to be at home; it’s not. The advantage goes to Nebraska.
