The Tennessee Volunteers will have to play the North Carolina Tar Heels after all, not long after Vols’ athletic director Mike Hamilton paid to get out of a two-game series that was scheduled between these teams over the next couple of years in an effort to keep head coach Derek Dooley’s schedule from being too tough in the early going.

  • Online Sports Betting Odds: UNC – 1.5

The Volunteers should still have a decided advantage in terms of both talent and home field advantage, as the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl will be played at LP Field in front of a sold-out football betting crowd in Tennessee.

NCAA Football Betting Preview: North Carolina

The Tar Heels struggled to a 4-4 record in the ACC-Coastal, losing two of their final three games to finish third in the division. North Carolina has had it tough both on and off the field this season, with 14 players missing at least one game and seven sitting out for the entire year following controversy that led to the resignation of assistant coach John Blake. Those losses hurt a defensive unit that was regarded as one of the best in the country heading in to this year with nine starters returning, but the absences contributed to the Tar Heels finishing fourth in the conference in total defense. North Carolina will be without linebacker Bruce Carter on top of their existing injuries for this game, as well as offensive lineman Alan Pelc.

NCAA Football Betting Preview: Tennessee

The Volunteers will look to take advantage of the injuries that UNC has dealt with in front of a sold-out crowd at LP Field, one that is anxious to play a Tar Heels’ team that Tennessee opted out of a two-game mini series with over the next couple of years. Dooley’s squad has looked good on both sides of the ball while playing in the best college football betting conference, particularly on offense since Tyler Bray replaced Matt Simms at quarterback following a 2-6 start. Bray threw for 12 touchdowns during the team’s four-game winning streak to close out the season, passing for 77 more yards that Simms despite 17 fewer attempts. The Orange will rely heavily on Bray for another big outing, as well as running back Tauren Poole, who averaged 91.5 yards over the last four games.

The Match Up: North Carolina vs. Tennessee

The Tar Heels must be looking forward to next season already after a tumultuous year in which they suffered through injuries and inconsistencies caused by off-field drama. They may have one more big effort in them against Tennessee, but even so they may not be able to get the job done against a Volunteers’ team that has put the pieces together over the past few weeks. Tennessee will have a decided advantage playing in front of a home crowd in the sold-out LP Field, and that should play another major factor.
