NCAA Football Power Rankings - “Chokehoma” takes a tumble, BYU profits

Posted by Blake Frazier on 9/9/2009 11:22:24 AM
football bettingIt was an exciting NCAA football betting week to open up the 2009 campaign, as one BCS championship contender lost more than just a game, while one of the BCS busters takes a big jump up the rankings.

(Last week’s rankings in brackets)

1. (1) Florida (1-0): No muss, no fuss in a 62-3 destruction of Charleston State, and I know it’s a D-II school, but 624 yards of offense is just ridiculous.

2. (2) Texas (1-0): The Longhorns rolled, and Jordan Shipley racked up 180 receiving yards and a touchdown. How long has this guy been at Texas now, 16 years?

3. (3) USC (1-0): Matt Barkley got a good warm-up against San Jose State, but now the real fun begins: a trip to Columbus to prove why the Trojans are favored in Saturday’s USC vs Ohio State odds.

4. (6) Alabama (1-0): Despite the 34-24 score, the Crimson Tide dominated Virginia Tech, rushing for 268 yards. If it wasn’t for their 10 penalties, Alabama may have won by 20.

5. (9) Oklahoma State (1-0): We all know that the Cowboys could score points with anyone in the country, but if they play defense like they did in their 24-10 win over Georgia, Oklahoma State will be one of the sports betting sleeper picks of the season.

6. (8) Boise State (1-0): It doesn’t matter who you are, winning 50 games in a row at home is an unbelievable feat. However, watching the Broncos play on their blue turf makes you feel like you’re wearing Smurf-tinted glasses after a while.

7. (20) BYU (1-0): The Cougars knocked out Sam Bradford, then held on for a 14-13 upset of the Sooners in Dallas. The door is now open for a BCS bowl; all of their remaining “tough” games are at home.

8. (7) Penn State (1-0): It’s nothing that the Nittany Lions did to drop a spot, it’s that the teams in front of them had better wins. It’s good to see 82-year-old Joe Paterno back on the sidelines and not in the press box.

9. (10) Ole Miss (1-0): It’s a good thing that the Rebels have the week off, as more than a dozen of their players have reported flu-like symptoms and missed practice on Tuesday. They didn’t even get going until the fourth quarter of their 45-14 win over Memphis, dropping 28 points in the last 15 minutes to cover in your offshore sportsbook.

10. (5) Ohio State (1-0): If you’re struggling to beat Navy at home, a visiting USC with the deepest group of running backs in the nation is going to be a problem. Outside of Terrelle Pryor, the Buckeyes have no offensive playmakers.

11. (16) California (1-0): The Golden Bears showed they were the main challengers to USC in the Pac-10 with a 52-13 dismantling of Maryland.

12. (12) LSU (1-0): I’m giving more credit to Washington than I’ll rag on LSU for only beating the Huskies 31-23. But really, the Tigers need to be better once the SEC season starts.

13. (18) Georgia Tech (1-0): 335 yards on the ground is impressive, but three turnovers is not. The Yellow Jackets need to take care of the ball.

14. (15) Notre Dame (1-0): What’s this? Notre Dame vs Michigan odds that are worth caring about?

15. (--) Miami (1-0): The ‘Canes beat Florida State in the best game of Week 1, but there’s no time celebrate as Georgia Tech visits the Sunshine State.

16. (13) Utah (1-0): The Utes could be a trap pick in this week’s NCAA football odds when they head to San Jose State, as they could be looking ahead to Oregon.

17. (19) Nebraska (1-0): A 49-3 win and coach Bo Pelini calls his defense soft? I like the expectations in Lincoln.

18. (--) Missouri (1-0): A 37-9 romp over Illinois has to be good for a team that is almost completely brand new.

19. (14) Georgia (0-1): Yeah, they lost, but they kept Oklahoma State’s high-powered offense in check.

20. (4) Oklahoma (0-1): They lost to BYU, Heisman winner Sam Bradford is out for 2-4 weeks, and All-American tight end Jermaine Gresham is gone for the season. Oklahoma’s big-game reputation took a beating against BYU, and online betting players in the Sooner State may be looking ahead to hoops season already.
