NCAA Football Power Rankings - 'Canes coming on strong, Crimson Tide challenging Gators

Posted by Blake Frazier on 9/23/2009 10:57:55 AM
bet on footballAfter a week’s break, betonline.com’s Power Rankings are back to aid all you NCAA football betting players as you prepare to make your picks. The big movers over the last two weeks are Miami and California, while Alabama is pushing SEC rival Florida for the top spot, with everyone anxiously awaiting a possible rematch of last year’s SEC Championship Game.

1. (1) Florida (3-0): The Gators got the job done against Tennessee, but there are some concerns with the receiving corps. Still, anything is possible with Tim Tebow at the helm.

2. (4) Alabama (3-0): The defense was expected to be this nasty, but the offense is exceeding all preseason expectations.

3. (2) Texas (3-0): Colt McCoy battled the flu to lead Texas to a revenge win over Texas Tech, but the Longhorns still have to work on stopping the pass to boost their online sports betting odds.

4. (15) Miami (3-0): The Hurricanes followed up their upset win at Florida State with a romp of Georgia Tech. When did Jacory Harris turn the quarterback as a collegiate quarterback? Must have been one hard summer.

5. (8) Penn State (3-0): A tricky game against Iowa looms for the Nittany Lions this weekend, but at least it’s in Happy Valley.

6. (11) California (3-0): Jahvid Best has averaged over 137 yards in the first three games of the season, and now the Golden Bears are the team to beat in the Pac-10. This week’s Cal vs Oregon odds could be exciting if the Golden Bears are looking ahead to USC.

7. (6) Boise State (3-0): The Broncos are hanging in the top 10, but they’re going to have to start embarrassing teams with such a weak schedule, like they did two weeks ago in a 51-0 humiliation of Miami (OH).

8. (--) Houston (2-0): Their upset of Oklahoma State put the Cougars on the map a couple of weeks ago, but they have to follow it up with a win at Texas Tech this week.

9. (12) LSU (3-0): That opening-week win at Washington is looking a lot better for the Tigers, who are now getting into the meat of their SEC schedule.

10. (10) Ohio State (2-1): Terrelle Pryor may have a field day against Illinois this week, but the Buckeyes are going to need some big, big wins this season ahead of a tough closing stretch.

11. (--) Virginia Tech (2-1): I struggled with this, because Tyrod Thomas may have the worst arm I’ve ever seen, but he always seems to make the pass when he needs to. This week’s Miami vs Virginia Tech odds will be the hottest of the week, and crucial in the ACC Coastal race.

12. (3) USC (2-1): Just as sure as the seasons will change, a USC team will ruin their national-championship hopes with a Pac-10 loss, which happened last week against Washington. The Trojans are praying that the Huskies continue to play well all season.

13. (--) Washington (2-1): The Huskies’ turnaround may be the story of the college football season. Jake Locker looked like an NFL-ready quarterback against the Trojans, earning high praise from USC coach Pete Carroll...and he’s still a junior.

14. (20) Oklahoma (2-1): The Sooners have the week off after outscoring Idaho State and Tulsa 109-0. Landry Jones has at least showed that Oklahoma will still be able to put up points when Sam Bradford graduates or leaves for the NFL.

15. (5) Oklahoma State (2-1): Maybe it was too early to start lauding the Cowboys’ defense as they got lit up by Houston, and were outgained by Rice. Oklahoma State is this year’s Georgia: too much pressure from high expectations.

16. (18) Missouri (3-0): The Tigers get the nod over their rivals from Kansas because of a lack of experience, but after they head to Nevada, they face Nebraska, Oklahoma State and Texas. This will show just how good Mizzou is.

17. (--) Florida State (2-1): Will the real Seminoles stand up? How do you struggle to beat Jacksonville State at home, and then go to BYU and rack up 54 points? Something really needs to be done about a defense that is 101st in the country.

18. (--) Cincinnati (3-0): A tough win at Oregon State showed that the Bearcats are no joke, and last year’s Big East championship wasn’t a fluke. Still, though...it’s the Big East, which is somewhere between the major conferences and the mid-majors.

19. (--) Michigan (3-0): Welcome back, Wolverines. College football is a better place now that you’re a decent team.

20. (--) Kansas (3-0): Todd Reesing is looking to close out a surprising college career with a bang; with Reesing under center and Mark Mangino on the sidelines, the Jayhawks are now a legitimate pick in your offshore sportsbook.
