NCAA Football Power Rankings - Gators still best of the bunch

Posted by Blake Frazier on 10/14/2009 12:47:23 PM
Florida’s NCAA football betting chances were in a bit of doubt before their trip to LSU last week, but a great coaching performance and a phenomenal defense was enough to keep the Gators at the top of the betonline.com’s Power Rankings.

1. (1) Florida (5-0): Turns out we were all looking in the wrong place. Tim Tebow is essential to the Gators’ BCS championship hopes, but Urban Meyer and the defense was the difference in their 13-3 win in Death Valley.

2. (2) Alabama (6-0): The Crimson Tide are just waiting for Florida to slip up. Alabama dominated Ole Miss 22-3 on the road, and they’ve now given up seven points or less in half of their games.

3. (4) Texas (5-0): Everyone talks about Colt McCoy, but how about Jordan Shipley? He may be the best receiver in the country. He’ll have the chance to prove it in the Red River Rivalry.

4. (6) Virginia Tech (5-1): The Hokies have reeled off five in a row since losing to Alabama in the season opener, and this week’s trip to Georgia Tech could be the only thing standing in the way of running the table.

5. (5) USC (4-1): The Trojans got a week off before their rivalry trip to Notre Dame, which hasn’t meant anything to sportsbook players since USC’s 34-31 win in 2005.

6. (9) Ohio State (5-1): Did the Buckeyes only gain 184 yards at home and still beat Wisconsin 31-13? That’s why Ohio State won’t ever be allowed in a BCS title game ever again.

7. (7) Miami (4-1): Now that the hard part is over, the Hurricanes can take a breather for a couple of weeks.

8. (8) Boise State (5-0): This week’s trip to Tulsa should be the only thing standing between the Broncos and a perfect record, but I pray to everything that Boise State loses.

9. (11) Iowa (6-0): There aren’t many NFL picks on this team, but the Hawkeyes aren’t afraid of anyone and could very well end up in the Rose Bowl.

10. (10) Cincinnati (5-0): Somebody’s season is going to be over after Thursday’s Cincinnati-South Florida tilt in the Big East.

11. (14) Oregon (5-1): Letting LeGarrette Blount back on the team may kill the Ducks’ chances for those who are betting online. The Ducks have been a roll since.

12. (12) Nebraska (4-1): The Cornhuskers’ defense may be the most underrated in the nation, and they kept Nebraska in a 27-12 win at Missouri before the offense came to life.

13. (15) Kansas (5-0): The Jayhawks better sort out that defense before they head to Colorado on Saturday.

14. (3) LSU (5-1): Les Miles was outcoached, and Jordan Jefferson is a terrible quarterback. He looks like former Tiger JaMarcus Russell looked the next day, when Russell’s Raiders were mauled by the New York Giants.

15. (19) South Carolina (5-1): The Gamecocks head to Alabama this weekend, beginning a stretch of three road games in four overall on the road.

16. (18) Oklahoma (3-2): This week’s Oklahoma vs Texas odds are against the Sooners, and that may be the best-case scenario for them, especially with Sam Bradford back in the fold.

17. (--) Georgia Tech (5-1): The Yellow Jackets can make some noise with a win over visiting Virginia Tech.

18. (17) Penn State (5-1): Beating Eastern Illinois 52-3 is mildly impressive, but even running the table may not be enough to claim the Big Ten title for Joe Pa and the Nittany Lions.

19. (13) Missouri (4-1): Mizzou’s collapse in the final 15 minutes of their loss to Nebraska proved the Tigers aren’t there yet, but the foundation is good.

20. (--) South Florida (5-0): The Bulls haven’t missed a beat without Matt Grothe at quarterback, and this week’s visit from Cincinnati is just huge.
