The Ohio State Buckeyes are in trouble as far as the BCS is concerned. The Buckeyes need to be impressive this weekend against the University of Minnesota.

Why To Bet On Ohio State

The Buckeyes ironed out a lot of problems last week against the Purdue Boilermakers, cruising to a 49-0 victory. One week after losing to the Wisconsin Badgers, Ohio State regained its swagger and looked the part of a Big Ten heavyweight. The Buckeyes delivered two separate flurries to crush the Boilermakers with ruthless efficiency. OSU scored three touchdowns in the game’s first 16 minutes and then, after a lull, piled on three more touchdowns in the final five minutes of the first half to take a 42-0 lead to the locker room at halftime. Yes, quarterback Terrelle Pryor threw two interceptions, but the rest of his team flourished, as the Buckeyes rolled up 489 total yards (and that takes into account the fact that OSU played second- and third-stringers throughout the second half) while giving up just 118 yards to Purdue. The Ohio State defense was so comprehensively strong that Purdue gained only 30 rushing yards in the entire game. Minnesota, the team that Ohio State faces this week, lost to Purdue rather decisively, by a 28-17 margin. If Ohio State can absolutely eviscerate Purdue, there’s no good reason to think that the outcome will be any different on Oct. 30 in Minneapolis.

Why To Bet On Minnesota

The Minnesota Golden Gophers made some small progress this past week in the first game for interim head coach Jeff Horton, who replaced the just-fired Tim Brewster. Minnesota outgained the Penn State Nittany Lions, 433 yards to 351, this past weekend at TCF Bank Stadium, the Gophers’ gleaming new stadium. Golden Gopher quarterback Adam Weber threw three touchdown passes and passed the 10,000-yard mark for his career, cementing his place as one of the school’s better all-time signal callers. Minnesota gained 26 first downs to Penn State’s 17, and generally moved the ball with a great deal of consistency. The problem for Minnesota was that it couldn’t finish drives, which was partly a product of the fact that Penn State owned a field-position advantage for much of the day. If the Golden Gophers can pull off three or four big kick returns against a terrible Ohio State special teams unit that has been a sieve in both punt and kickoff coverage this year, the Gophers can either score directly or set up short fields for their offense. With two interceptions of the turnover-prone Pryor, Minnesota could further swing this game in its direction. The fact that this is a home night game will juice up the hometown crowd, giving the Gophers added momentum in this main-event occasion. This will be the U of M’s bowl game in 2010, so if everything goes Minnesota’s way in the first half, an upset will become possible.

How The Game Will Play Out

The Gophers will return one kick, but not the four they need. Pryor will throw only one interception, not the three Minnesota needs. Ohio State crushed Purdue, so the Buckeyes should indeed roll over the Golden Gophers with precious little resistance. The Buckeyes should cover the number.
