Oklahoma Sooners Betting Predictions – Bridesmaid Sooners Are A Tough Sell To Win It All

Posted by Blake Frazier on 7/31/2012 6:18:22 PM

Online betting players have seen Oklahoma feature in the top 25 rankings throughout the Bob Stoops era, but they haven’t won a national title since 2000, even though they’ve finished in the top 10 seven times since then. The Sooners are once again favored in the conference and nationally, but can they get over the hump?

Head Coach: Bob Stoops (13th year)
Offensive Coordinator: Josh Heupel/Jay Norvell
Defensive Coordinator: Mike Stoops
Stadium: Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, Norman, OK
Capacity: 82,112
National Championships: 7

Landry Jones returns to hopefully cap his OU career with a national championship to add to his resume for the Sooners, who welcome seven other starters back, including four up front. Jones got used to life after Ryan Broyles after he suffered a knee injury early in November, and he’ll get Dominique Whaley back from injury as well; Whaley and Roy Finch should, once again, provide a solid duo out of the backfield. Kenny Stills and Jaz Lawrence stepped up in Broyles’ absence and with a full summer under their belts, the Oklahoma passing game should be flying again in 2012.

Jones has everything he needs to win a national title, but 15 turnovers is too many for an elite quarterback and in the final four games of last season, he threw one touchdown with six picks. If the Sooners are going to challenge for the national title, Jones has to take better care of the ball.

Grade: A-

The Sooners finished 55th in the country in total defense, but they were 31st in points allowed because they were active, forcing 27 turnovers. All three linebackers are back and ready to go, along with safety Aaron Colvin, who led the team in tackles. That means the linebackers have to improve because teams are getting to the third level against the Sooners, but they should be better with a year’s experience.

The back end will have to be solid because Oklahoma lost their best pass rusher in Frank Alexander, although R.J. Washington did have five sacks in 2011. The Sooners were eighth in sacks last season and that took a lot of pressure off their secondary, which had enough trouble dealing with the pass as OU was 79th in pass defense.

Grade: B-

Special Teams

Oklahoma will have their kicker and punter back from last season and both of those units were very good last season, and they’ll need to be again. Kicker Mike Hunnicutt was third in the country in total field goals, while the Sooners were 35th in punting behind Tress Way, and these players will play an important role in OU’s success in 2012.

The return team lost Broyles, but Oklahoma’s return teams were in the middle of the pack anyway when it comes to national rankings and the team may turn to Trey Franks, who ran back kickoffs. Stills took over punt-return duties when Broyles was hurt, but he may be too important to the offense this season.

Grade: B

It shouldn’t be a shock to find the Sooners near the top of the college football betting odds, and they’re priced at -125 to win the Big 12, as well as +1000 for the national championship. Oklahoma still has more talent than the rest of the Big 12 and they should have learned lessons from last season, when they began the season as the No.1 team in the preseason. But the defense struggled horribly in the second half of the campaign, allowing 41 points or more three times in the last seven games.

The Sooners have to navigate late-season trips to West Virginia and TCU, and of course, there are the rivalry games featuring Texas and Oklahoma State (at a neutral site and at home, respectively). Oklahoma has the chops to win the Big 12 and that is a safe bet. However, they’ve came up short so many times on the big stage that it is difficult to recommend their sports betting odds.
