Oklahoma State Cowboys Betting Tips– After Magical 2011, Cowboys Must Be On Guard

At any of several sports betting sites, the Oklahoma State Cowboys aren't going to receive quite the same degree of love they gained last season. OSU soared last year because it had the best pitch-and-catch combination in the United States. Veteran quarterback Brandon Weeden, a 28-year-old who failed as a professional baseball player, had college eligibility remaining at OSU, and put it to good use. Weeden was a pitcher of a different sort, throwing the ball to Justin Blackmon, a dominant receiver who laid waste to Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl and torched just about every Big 12 defense he faced. Oklahoma State had more and better weapons than any of its opponents. Only an improbable stumble at Iowa State on Nov. 17, a 37-31 double-overtime loss, kept the Pokes from delivering an unbeaten season.

Now, the Cowboys have to try to produce the same results with less proven and far less experienced players. Weeden and Blackmon are both gone. Clint Chelf, a junior, will be asked to carry the load at quarterback, but he's an entirely unproven commodity because Weeden remained injury-free throughout 2011... and owned the composure you'd expect of a 28-year-old man. OSU just got a lot younger at quarterback. That's inevitably going to provide a few more difficulties to the Cowboys this season.

Grade: B+

In Oklahoma State's rise to prominence last season, the offense clearly took center stage, but the defense continuously produced turnovers. The Cowboys had one of the best turnover differentials in the nation last season, and that's how they worked their way to the top. It's not easy to force turnovers, however, so one wonders if the laws of averages will catch up with a defense that allowed plenty of yards last season and got smoked by a number of offenses, including Kansas State's. This unit needs to play above expectations in 2012 if the Cowboys want to go far.

Special Teams

College Football betting gurus who study college football know that Oklahoma State's kicking game betrayed the team in the loss at Iowa State last November. The Cowboys were generally solid, but they missed a few crucial opportunities. This year, the team's margin for error will be smaller, since a less proven offense is likely to generate more field goal tries.

Grade: B-

The plain fact of the matter is that at just about any sportsbook, the odds of Oklahoma State repeating what it did last year are virtually nil. This team will not defend its Big 12 title or its Fiesta Bowl win. A 9-3 season would be good for this team, and since the program now owns a level of stature it didn't possess in the past, it's reasonable to expect the Pokes to live up to their potential. A 9-3 record it is for Oklahoma State in 2012.
