orange bowl betting

Online betting players will be treated to a matchup of contrasting styles in the Orange Bowl, where Stanford Cardinals’ finesse will meet the Virginia Tech Hokies’ power, and this game will be won at the line of scrimmage, where the Hokies’ defense will be the main factor in an upset for the ACC.

  • What: NCAA Football Betting
  • When: Monday, January 3rd, 8:30 PM ET
  • Where: Sun Life Stadium, Miami, FL
  • Pick: Virginia Tech +3.5

What’s On The Line

The No.4 Cardinal (11-1) finished a game behind the Oregon Ducks in the Pac-10, but the consolation prize is their first BCS bowl since losing the 2000 Rose Bowl to the Wisconsin Badgers, and they’ll be looking for their first bowl win since 1996, which is only a span of three games. The No.13 Hokies (11-2) lost their first two non-conference games, then won their last 11 en route to their fourth ACC title since 2004. Virginia Tech split a pair of Orange Bowls in 2008 and 2009, so this may be more important to Stanford’s push to establish themselves as a top-tier college football program.

Offensive Matchups: Orange Bowl Betting

Stanford’s success is largely due to an offense that is eighth in the nation in points scored, led by Andrew Luck, and if the junior quarterback decides to declare for the draft, many feel he’d be the No.1 pick. Luck is seventh in passer rating, and he had 28 touchdowns to seven picks, spreading the ball to a number of receivers. But he also has a lot of help from Stepfan Taylor and a ground game that doesn’t get that much attention, and that bodes well for Taylor. It also keeps defenses honest and allows Luck to flourish. The best part of it all may be a line that has allowed five sacks.

Tyrod Taylor has progressed a lot from his freshman to his senior year, and he is 12th in passer rating for the Hokies, who are 19th in points scored. Virginia Tech’s ground game is 18th in the country and very deep, with Taylor and Darren Evans leading the way. The Hokies’ aerial game isn’t going to scare anyone, but Taylor can now make the throws that he consistently missed four years ago, and you may not have seen a quarterback improve as much as he has over four years. The line was banged up throughout the season, but they got healthier and Virginia Tech got better.

Betting Edge: Stanford

Defensive Matchups: Orange Bowl Betting

The Stanford defense has improved over last year, but they can be run on. They play a 3-4 anchored by tackle Sione Fua, and if you can keep him under control, you can run up the middle against the Cardinal, who are 11th in points against. The secondary is opportunistic and will take advantage of mistakes, but the games against Oregon and USC may show Virginia Tech a few things. The 3-4 allows them to rush defenders off the edges, but they may try to contain Taylor a bit more in this game.

Virginia Tech’s defense really stepped as the season went on, holding five opponents under 17 points, and even the 33 points they gave up against Florida State don’t matter because most of those were amassed when the game was well in hand. Virginia Tech’s secondary is one of the best in the country and they’re going to have their hands full with a varied Stanford offense. The key for the Hokies, though, may be stopping Taylor and the Virginia Tech running game, to at least take the play-action pass away.

Betting Edge: Virginia Tech

Notable Injuries: Orange Bowl Betting

Backup pivot Alex Loukas (leg) and receiver Chris Owusu (undisclosed) are questionable for the Cardinal in this game.

Linebackers Bruce Taylor (shoulder) and Lyndell Gibson (shoulder) will probably suit up for the Hokies.

Betting Edge: Draw

Outlook and Pick: Orange Bowl Betting

NCAA football betting odds have the Cardinal as a 3.5-point favorite in their first-ever meeting with Virginia Tech, who are used to the confines of Sun Life Stadium and should have a few more fans in the house as they’re much closer to Miami than Stanford is. As far as the matchup goes, it’s all about Virginia Tech’s ability to stop Stanford, and we think they can. Luck has never played in a bowl game before (he was hurt before last year’s loss to the Oklahoma Sooners in the Sun Bowl), and the Virginia Tech defense played much better down the stretch. Stanford’s defense had problems with Oregon’s Darron Thomas, and Taylor is a similar dual-threat quarterback, but he is a better passer than Thomas. We’re taking Virginia Tech in a sports betting upset.

Blake’s Pick: Virginia Tech
