Oregon State Boise State – Boise Tackles Its Toughest Remaining Test In 2010

The whole college football community knew this would be a huge game if Boise State beat Virginia Tech. Well, Boise State beat Virginia Tech. Buckle up.

NCAA football betting: Oregon State Beavers @ Boise State Broncos

Online Betting Odds: Boise State -17

Why To Bet On Oregon State

The Beavers are one of the more overachieving programs in the Western United States. Oregon State beat the USC Trojans in 2002, 2006, and 2008, during the height of the USC dynasty created by Pete Carroll. Coach Mike Riley has kept the Beavers very competitive in the Pac-10 Conference, so much so that Oregon State came within one victory of winning the league and advancing to the Rose Bowl in the 2008 season.

A more specific reason to like Oregon State in this game is the fact that the Beavers have received an upgrade at quarterback. The Beavers didn’t beat TCU (the team Boise State narrowly defeated in the 2010 Fiesta Bowl) earlier this season, but they pushed the Horned Frogs before finally falling, 30-21. Oregon State was competitive against TCU, and therefore should be reasonably competitive against Boise State, because quarterback Ryan Katz has an NFL arm and can throw frozen ropes to receivers such as James Rodgers in open space. If there was one part of Boise State’s defense that displayed noticeable vulnerabilities in the Broncos’ opening-week win over Virginia Tech, it was the secondary. Boise State’s safeties were late in providing help to cornerbacks on routes thrown along the edges of the field. If Katz can get Rodgers in a one-on-one matchup on the perimeter, Oregon State can hit big plays in the passing game and score enough points to keep pace with the Broncos’ own high-powered offense. Oregon State can definitely win a shootout if that’s the way this game unfolds.

Why To Bet On Boise State

The Broncos have become a team entirely worth a bettor’s trust. They won in Landover, Maryland, in what was essentially a road game for them against Virginia Tech. They won the 2010 Fiesta Bowl against TCU as an underdog. They covered the spread against TCU in the 2008 Poinsettia Bowl, losing by only one point. They won their hyped 2009 season opener against Oregon, smashing the Ducks with their defense. They won the 2007 Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma. This is simply a program that gets the job done in big games, and with nobody in the Western Athletic Conference being able to match up with them at every spot in the field, it really is true that this is the last big-time test for the Broncos in 2010. Playing at home, expect Boise State to deliver the goods once again.

How The Game Will Play Out

The accuracy of Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore, combined with the toughness and discipline of Boise’s defensive front seven, will prove to be an unbeatable combination at home in the state capital of Idaho. Boise State is a legitimate national program who can play with any team in the country. Playing at home is a huge plus for the Broncos, who are a veteran team with more polish and precision than Oregon State. The Beavers will put up a good fight for two and a half or three quarters, but Boise’s quality will be too much for OSU. However, the number here is pretty large. Oregon State is worthy of more respect than the line shows. Boise shouldn’t be threatened, but a two-touchdown spread sounds about right. Trust Boise to win this game without too much drama, but take the Beavers plus the points.
