Predictions For Betting On Sun Bowl – Yellow Jackets Try To Get Rid Of Their Losing Record

Posted by Blake Frazier on 12/20/2012 5:35:29 PM

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets enter the 2012 bowl season with a 6-7 record. They will try to get back to 7-7 by beating the USC Trojans in the latest edition of the Sun Bowl.

2012 Sun Bowl –
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. USC Trojans – Monday, December 31
Betting line: USC -10

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Legal online sports betting analysts are expecting this to be a comfortable USC victory, but Georgia Tech can certainly throw a curveball toward the experts. One has to start by making the very simple realization that USC just doesn't see the triple-option offense very often. The Pac-12 Conference is a league in which spread offenses are the flavor of the moment. Rich Rodriguez, Mike Leach, Chip Kelly, and Todd Graham run complex offenses, but they are not triple-option offenses. They're read-based spread offenses. Oregon State and Stanford do a lot of pro-set stuff, and other schools don't diverge all that much from what the Beavers and Cardinal try to do. The Pac-12's most potent offensive team, Oregon, is a running team, but that's a style of running that's different from what Georgia Tech likes to do. The Pac-12's champion, Stanford, is a really good running team, but that form of running is also different from the triple option in Atlanta. Georgia Tech's offense could really confuse USC's defense, and that's the main source of hope in this contest for the Yellow Jackets.

A point-within-a-point to consider is this: USC defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin resigned after the end of the regular season, likely due to the desire to return to the NFL and move away from the college game, which never seemed to fit the father of USC head coach Lane Kiffin. This vacuum in USC's defensive staff could make the Trojans' defense that much more vulnerable to the nuances and quirks of the triple option.

Why USC Will Win

When NCAA football betting gurus put aside other work and evaluate this particular matchup, they're going to realize that the Trojans should be able to throw the ball down the field all day long against Georgia Tech's secondary. Georgia Tech's defense was so bad in the first half of this season that it lost to Middle Tennessee, at home, by a 49-28 score. The result got defensive coordinator Al Groh fired, and so this team has been rudderless for much of the season. Even in one of the team's better victories, an 18-point triumph at North Carolina, the defense gave up 50 points (it was just that the offense scored 68). Georgia Tech will not have an answer for USC's receivers, especially Marqise Lee, who set a single-game NCAA record for receiving yards earlier this season with 345 against Arizona, on 16 catches. The Trojans might give up 30 or 35 points in this game, but they might very well score 49 or more points, too.

Who Will Win

It’s going to be a long day for both defenses, but USC should be able to have a lot more success than Georgia Tech because its matchup advantages are more pronounced, especially when its receivers go up against the Yellow Jackets' corners and safeties. Take the Trojans here.
