Predictions For College Football Betting – Bettors Summary Of Changes To NCAA Conferences

Posted by Blake Frazier on 8/20/2012 5:43:44 PM

The composition of the nation's Division I-A college sports conferences will have an effect on the 2012 college football season at the Football Bowl Subdivision level. Here's an overview.

Major Changes And Their Effects: 2012 College Football Season

When the online sports betting legal realm is examined, the new college football season will experience a number of twists and turns based on the changes that emerged through conference realignment. One should start with the Southeastern Conference, now at 14 teams as opposed to its former size of 12. Texas A&M joins the West Division while Missouri joins the East. What will these two schools do for the flow and rhythm of the SEC this autumn? In this maiden voyage for A&M and Missouri, one should bet against the Aggies and Tigers, at least to the extent that they will not win more than nine games, probably not more than eight, in the regular season.

The SEC is going to be such a grind that A&M and Missouri, unaccustomed to their new league, are going to get pushed around by elite teams. Perhaps they will both find their bearings in future seasons, maybe enough for Missouri to steal an East title in 2013 or 2014, but in 2012, it's quite clear that these teams are going to struggle. They haven't recruited at a level needed to rule the SEC. Their levels of depth and speed – particularly at linebacker and on the defensive line – are not where they need to be in the SEC. When A&M and Missouri reach the middle of October, they're going to get worn down, and one should bet against them at that point in the season. Other SEC teams will be fresher and more prepared to take them on.

In the aftermath of all the high-stakes poker games that have been played by conference commissioners, the new landscape of the conferences will change in this respect as well: TCU and West Virginia are going to make Big 12 football that much less predictable. The Big 12 is a passing-first league, a league dominated by offense. TCU and West Virginia both throw the ball at a high level, especially West Virginia. The Mountaineers have the quarterback (Geno Smith) and the receivers (Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey) to really scare the rest of the Big 12, including preseason favorite Oklahoma.

TCU is no slouch, but the Horned Frogs are coming off a drug scandal that will leave them distracted and a little thinner for the coming season. It's going to be difficult to assess how much TCU and West Virginia will match up with programs they haven't played, such as Kansas State and Oklahoma State. In year one of their Big 12 lives, the Horned Frogs and Mountaineers shouldn't be expected to win the league, but they will come close.

The college football betting calculus is going to be changed for this reason, too: Temple will join the Big East without having one year to prepare. Many teams undergoing transitions to conferences have a year to wait, but Temple agreed to go immediately to the Big East. This makes Temple a sitting duck in 2012 – you will want to bet against the Owls often.
