Predictions For West Virginia Texas Betting – Expect The Unexpected When Mountaineers Face Horns

Posted by Blake Frazier on 10/1/2012 6:54:26 PM

The West Virginia Mountaineers played no defense in week five of the college football season. The Texas Longhorns played very little defense in week five. What will happen when they meet?

West Virginia Mountaineers @ Texas Longhorns – Saturday, October 6
NCAA football betting line: No line

Why West Virginia Will Win

Even an online horse betting guru, when presented with an account of Geno Smith's stat line, could tell you that he played really well against the Baylor Bears this past Saturday. Smith was facing a terrible defense, but he still wowed the nation with the following numbers: 45 of 51 completions, 656 passing yards, eight touchdowns, no interceptions, and 687 total yards. West Virginia posted 807 total yards and tallied 70 points. The Mountaineers gave up 63 points and yet won by running out the final two minutes of the clock. Baylor didn't even gain a chance to tie West Virginia in the final minutes. That's how good Smith was against Baylor.

Now, Smith gets to face a Texas defense that was thought to be the strongest component of the Longhorns this season, but which got gashed this past weekend at Oklahoma State. Texas conceded 576 yards to Oklahoma State despite the fact that OSU held the ball for under 24 minutes in the game. The Cowboys ripped the Longhorns' defense for 275 rushing yards, causing Texas defensive coordinator Manny Diaz to wonder what he really has in terms of talent and depth. West Virginia should be able to score a lot against Texas, that's for sure.

Why Texas Will Win

If a winning poker hand exists for the Longhorns, the notion of "Texas Hold 'Em" might not have its traditional meaning in this game. Texas won't win by holding down West Virginia; it will win by outscoring the Mountaineers.

Texas' offense was viewed to be the weakness of the Longhorns in 2012, but after a 41-36 win at Oklahoma State, it would seem that the boys in burnt orange will be just fine on this side of the ball. Quarterback David Ash, under the direction of offensive coordinator Bryan Harsin, has flourished after a very rocky 2011 season that unkindly introduced him to the cutthroat competition of college football. Ash was a mess last year, but he starred against Oklahoma State, completing a fourth-down pass in the final minutes when Texas was trailing by a 36-34 margin.

Ash led Texas back from the brink and displayed a level of poise many Longhorn fans and coaches thought they wouldn't see this soon in 2012. Harsin has brought along Ash at a fast pace, and that has to give Texas the belief that it can ring up a ton of points against a West Virginia defense that conceded 63 of them to Baylor in week five. The Mountaineers conceded 700 yards, 581 on the ground. If Texas can generate just a few defensive stops in timely moments, it should win. Playing at home and at night should help the Horns' cause.

Who Will Win

It’s clear that at least 60 points will be scored in this game, but West Virginia hopes that at least 100 points will be scored. Texas has the better defense, but that's only because West Virginia's defense is absolutely awful. West Virginia needs to score over 50 points – that's not a joke – to win. Texas can probably win with 42 points and a half-decent defensive performance. Take the Longhorns in what should be a crazy contest.
