Stanford Doesn’t Want To Look Ahead To Oregon When It Plays Oregon State

Posted by Blake Frazier on 2/4/2014 5:55:12 AM

In the Pac-12 Conference’s North Division, Stanford is chasing Oregon. However, the Cardinal must take care of Oregon State before they worry about their big duel with the Ducks.

Stanford Cardinal @ Oregon State Beavers – Saturday, October 26
Sport betting line: Stanford -5

Why Stanford Will Win

When the best online betting sites tackle this clash, they will not overreact to the “look-ahead” factor with respect to Stanford. Yes, college kids often do look ahead to bigger games, but Stanford will not look ahead to the huge collision with Oregon on Nov. 7 in a Thursday night prime-time showcase. Why can this be said with such noticeable confidence? Stanford has already been caught with its pants down this season. The Cardinal had just beaten a good Washington team, but they lost at Utah the week after in what was a genuine letdown. That Utah loss also preceded a high-profile game against UCLA. The Cardinal learned a very important lesson about maintaining an even keel from week to week and not getting caught up in the afterglow of one win or the prospect of playing a huge game the week after. Stanford head coach David Shaw will teach his team to take Oregon State very seriously, and if his players do respond the right way, the Cardinal should win.

Stanford does have the better team here. The Cardinal are far stronger in the trenches than the Beavers. Stanford’s offensive line should manhandle Oregon State’s defensive line. Oregon State’s pass defense might be extremely week, but Stanford can probably establish the run if it wants to. Yet, the Cardinal know that if they do face passing situations, they can trust their big-play receiver, Ty Montgomery, against the Beavers’ leaky secondary. There are too many favorable battles for Stanford when it has the ball. Oregon State will not be able to stop the Cardinal on Saturday night.

Why Oregon State Will Win

This is an intriguing online sports betting scenario to contemplate. It’s true that Stanford has been to a BCS bowl in each of the past three seasons, but the Cardinal are showing signs of being vulnerable in this game. Quarterback Kevin Hogan has not substantially improved this season. He looks a little uneven at times and has not given Shaw the level of performance that was expected in 2013. As long as Hogan remains a fairly average quarterback, Stanford might not be able to score a large amount of points. This will open the door for Oregon State’s souped-up passing attack, led by quarterback Sean Mannion, to beat Stanford in a shootout. Mannion has been terrific this season, and if he plays his best game against Stanford, the Cardinal will be in big trouble.

Who Will Win?

The big-game experience of Stanford is hard to pick against. The Cardinal have the offensive line that can control the tempo of the game and put Oregon State on its heels.
